ive bought my first merc e class yesterday. However on the way home the cruise control was on but all off a sudden an error message appeared "cruise control and SPEEDTRONIC inoperative" and the car went into limp mode. I pulled up on the hard shoulder and turned the ignition off and on and then the car was back to normal but the ecu light is still on.

Then today I was driving down the road when the car snapped out of cruise control and was just revving, it was saying it was in drive but was just revving. When I turned the ignition off an on it was ok again. This is very alarming and I must admit it has put a downer on the feeling of buying a new car.

The trade guy I bought it from said that he will pay for a diag on the car and if I am not happy with the outcome I can have my money back.

Can anyone suggest what the problem could be? Or if I should just take it back?

Get the car on STAR at a Merc independent, see what's upsetting the car & go from there.

My opinion for what it's worth!

A gearbox that looses drive is a serious fault and a safety issue, I’d take the car back and get a refund. It’s not your problem to solve the issue and it may be a difficult/expensive journey that you’d rather avoid there are a lot of other cars out there

The car had it's auto box rebuilt by a specialist but it's clear it hasn't solved the problem. I'm not happy.

So the two main options are to get your money back or to accept a repair that is likely to be good enough to get it past the warranty expiry date?
If it was the main dealer I'd be a little concerned, any other dealer and I'd be holding the keys in one hand, my other hand would be outstretched, palm up.

It's not a main dealer. It's a used car dealer. I don't really want to drive the car back up there, would he have to recover it?

You said you got it from a trade guy so I gathered it wasn't a main dealer.
Not sure if he has to collect it as it's still able to be driven there so I think he can refuse, it's not his fault if you live far away.
Others will have different advice but there's no way I'd be taking it to an independent dealer unless you're keeping it.
A really bad start to your first Mercedes car experience, hope you get sorted with a good outcome that doesn't stress you out too much.
Things can go wrong with any dealer, the way they should be judged is what they do to put it right.
Luckily things have happened now instead of further down the line or out of warranty. You should have nothing to worry about as it was a trade sale, just a bit of a nuisance and a sour experience unfortunately.

Decisions time really, if you take it to have the codes read you are starting the repair process, my advice would be to drive it back to the trader even if the recovery vehicle AA/RAC have to finish the journey for you

I will take the car back. I am gutted because it really is a lovely car. 7 seats, Panoramic roof. The two options I really wanted. So hard to find a car that spec :(

Right decision based on the above if it's already had one rebuild or repair.

There are plenty out there even some with all the options you want.....
Post up what you are after - there's a few on here who will happily search out ads for you (it's like having your own little search engine minions..:p)

You can alwaas get an interim car in the meantime if you need one

Yeah taking it back is wise.
Don’t lose faith though, great cars when you get a good one...

I absolutely love the car. Really disappointed that it's not running as it should.

I think I will have to take it back and get a runaround while I wait for one.

Whatever is discussed or promised - get it in writing if possible, and if still not happy then have it independently inspected by a dealer or other MB expert which probably won't be cheap but better than losing whats likely to happen if all else eventually fails.

My SL started the same symptoms, cruise would disconnect, sometimes lost drive and just revved up. I took into have the transmission oil checked and it was found to be 2 litres low, the garage cleared the faults that came up with low oil and after A half hour was on my way again. Worth a shot, even if its had a reconditioned trans, it could be that the level wasn't correct?

All credit to the seller and the right thing to do on his part

When you find a potential replacement do post the car up on here to get a consensus of opinions there is a lot of experience to tap into on the forum

Don't panic into getting your money back if the car is one you like, find out what the problem is then make your mind up, these cars can throw up all sorts of problems with low batteries and odd switch faults.
If you don't like it then return it.

I have had a diagnostic completed on the car and these are the faults that came back.

They said that they have never come across the "selection range sensor A has an electrical fault" problem before and they were unsure what it was.

Can anyone shed some light?
