E class Coupe
Hi all

I have recently in the last couple of months upgraded my Mondeo and opted for a 2016 E Class coupe. (E220)

Whilst enjoying the car far more than the Ford, the car is only returning an average of 29MPG which to me seems very low for essentially a 2ltr Diesel

I don't do a huge amount of miles (roughly 10k a year) and only a handful of those are long haul journeys, however I had the Ford for 4 years doing the same driving and never got anything less than 42MPG

The car has had a new Oxygen sensor fitted in the last month or so and once again I've booked it in to Mercedes to be 'diagnosed' and to have software updates etc

I was wondering what other owners of these E classes were getting average MPG. I appreciate the lack of motorway mileage will bring the figure down but surely not to 29mpg?

Thanks all!

Welcome Tommy, that does seem a bit low.
I’d have thought nearer 40.
Diagnostic time indeed

Again me too, although it does very strongly depend on the kind of driving style. For the E220, which is a bit revvy to get power, it's entirely possible to get 28-30mpg. My E220 saloon averages 38mpg although that is starting to creep up now I have a smoother (albeit longer) works commute.

My E250 gives me an average of 42-44mpg on short run and 49-50mpg on a motorway run at around 80mph

Best I managed to get out of my E350 CDI on a long run ~400 miles was 48 mpg. 70-80 all the way as well as sitting in a bit of traffic in cardiff (went to watch boxing).

As for the coup 220 that does seem on the low side. That said in current temps mine is rinsing fuel as well, so don’t dare look at the mpg figures haha

As above pointless looking at mpg figures in these inclement conditions, my 350cdi is probably down to mid 20s mpg on short runs, by contrast best achieved in summer is circa 40+ on longer runs

Mercedes have come a long way in diesel economy, my 1975 'Old Rattlie' did 23 mpg, and that was on a good day

I squeezed 30mpg out of my SL500 on the motorway averaging 70-80 mph, made a pleasant change from the 19mpg around town, not bad for a 4.6l V8, my jag 3.0l petrol only gave me 17mpg in town and 23mpg on a run!

I was talking to a Taxi driver with an E220, I was complaining about only getting about 40 mpg in my CLK220 and he said he was getting 46 mpg and over 50 on long runs.
Still in 1993 I hired an Audi 2.0TDI for 6 weeks and drove it hard and was getting about 50mpg on average

I drove a Honda Insight back in 2005 or so. We thrashed it round Preston for an hour or so and when we got back it showed 80mpg! Apparently on a trip you could break 100mpg with ease. It was actually a lot of fun to drive (if a noisy due to having virtually no sound deadening!)

I discovered that 75-80mph is the sweet spot for MPG in my CL. Whether or not that's down to engine loading vs aero effects- the CL is a very slippery beast- I don't know but on a run from Hereford back home, I was able to keep around 28-30mpg. Very pleasantly surprised.

There is something wrong with your car or you drive like a madman all the time to return such low mpg figures. I do low mileage (less than you) and mainly short trips but my average mpg is in the high fifties and well over 60 when I do a longer run in the E220. It needs looking at and sorting as those figures are not acceptable. Let us know how you go on.

Thanks for the responses!

Considering I see a lot of E220's as taxis it seems accepting a figure of 29 would be a terrible choice for these drivers. Thankfully the car is only a year or so old so it's booked in with Mercedes in a couple of weeks. They will be running diagnostics and updating the software etc.

Thankfully it appears to be a problem with the car and not just how it should be, so it can stay with Mercedes till they figure out the issue. Nice to see I SHOULD be getting better figures!

Once again thanks!

It all depends on what you call short journeys which makes it difficult to compare. I did a couple of short runs this week of 3-4 miles and each one showed an average of about 25 mpg but my overall average is 45mpg for the year and just over 4,000 miles.

If you are doing cold starts and journeys of less than 5 miles in 20/30 zones then sub 30 is very possible. If the journeys are longer, or multiple whilst the engine is warm then you have an issue.

Diesels are not good for short journeys from cold.
