e220 cdi 2011 top end loud knock

Hi guys, got a 2011 E220 cdi cabrio with only 45k miles and a very loud top end knock. removed rocker cover and everything seems to be in tact, chain nice and tight.

Anything common on these to check?

Could you not use something like a screwdriver as a stethoscope to try and track down its source?

tried that but it's difficult to determine, however removed the sump and found a lot of metal filings near the pick up,looks like engine has had it

Oh dear, sorry to hear that. Out of interest; how long have you had the car and would there be any redress on the seller? I wonder if the mileage of 45k is genuine. That is probably an M651 engine then, with the cam chain/gears at the back?

A piston possibly has caught the liner and is hitting the top or bottom of the cylinder or both.

Lack of servicing, injector fault, incorrect fuelling, timing chain, Lanchester shafts
and incorrect mileage can be causes but unusual for that engine to fail unless problems are ignored and low quality maintenance.
