Hi everyone
I recently bought a mercedes sprinter 311 cdi lwb luton which is just 3 years old and has done 1298 miles just had it mot and serviced. The EDC light on the dash comes on sometimes with the fuel light, eventhough there is half a tank of fuel in there, i have no manual to tell me what this EDC means or what is happening, can anyone help please??
Thanks Paul

A van question, I'll take this one gentlemen.

From the owners manual for my 2003 sprinter -

EDC - engine control unit malfunction/contaminated fuel filter

When the key is turned to position 2 the EDC lamp should light up. It must go out once the engine is running.
If the light does not go out or lights up while the engine is running there is a fault on the engine control unit or the fuel filter needs replacing. The engines power output may be reduced.

Paul,

You should also have a light in the centre console of the dashboard with a fuel pump icon (it looks like a switch). if this is the fuel light you are refering to this means there is water in the fuel filter and it needs draining or replacing. Your fuel level warning light is a small orange triangle next to the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster. In my experience most dealers tend to replace the sedimentor type fuel filter with the standard non-drainable one as contaminated fuel is a rarity in this country.

Hope this clears up your problem, please let us know the outcome.

I have the same problem the EDC light will not go off I recently has a problem with some petrol in the fuel tank. Should the fuel filter have been changed when the fuel was drained??

Hi Guys, My 2000 208CDI sprinter has a similar fault, I have just brought it and the glow plug light is on all the time (Just ordered some new glow plugs and gonna investigate the relay) and when I fill up with diesel, the EDC light flicks on and I lose power and it stalls, start up again and away I go... weird!! Had a MB local guy plug in the diagnostics PC whilst we went for a test drive and it didn't do it or show any faults, so I am at a loss.

Graeme try driving with the fuel cap off the tank, just to ensure your system isnt airlocking.. but inevitably you will need to get a diagnostic done

Sprinter 308 cdi
Hi Graeme123, any updates?? I just bought a Sprinter this morning, after 100 miles driving on the M4 it cut out, while coasting at 70 after stalling I turned ignition off and on and it was fine. 3 mins later, same again but wouldn't restart. Pulled over onto hard shoulder and it started fine. Carried on driving for 5 mins and then it happened again!!! This time it wouldn't start up again, EDC light on, just wouldn't restart. As I just bought it this morning its still under warranty from the second car bloke, so its currently sat in a garage, very annoying but hopefully it'll be alright!?!

hi mate the glow plug light is nothing to do with the edc light the glow plug light is on because the red feed to the glow plug relay will be broke or water will have got to it its under the battery tray it will not stop the van from starting not sure about the edc any more info about it is it only when you fill up with fuel or all the time p.s could be fuel fliter thats the way i would go if not that i would go with a bad earth

edc light

my sprinter has had the same problem, edc light comes on followed by lack of power then stalls(very handy when on the motorway!)anyway had injectors checked, they were fine, had 3 diagnostic checks that came back no faults, very good bloke just been out,had yet another diagnostic test,he fixed it in minutes, turned out to be part of wiring loom that runs acroos top of engine mounting,it was rubbing,he clipped it & taped it out the way & fingers crossed its running gud:)

I have had the edc light come on in my sprinter but could it be because it has been lying unused for a few days and was a bit frozen but once it started heating up I turned it off and started it again and the light went off.
Or are there any up dates or fixes on the other posts
thanks Andy

Hi, wonder if anyone could help, got a 313cdi sprinter, its on a 55plate only 89000 on clock, had an edc light problem popping up on dash, i changed the fuel filter, this seemed to solve problem, then few months later was driving down motorway at about 75mph, van started to jib after about 20mins, with puffs of smoke out of back, i got injectors check and found out i needs 2 new ones, had all 4 of them done (refurbed) about 6 mths ago...... Just been out in van , doing about 65mph, van started to jib again, with puffs of smoke, this time the edc light flashed on then off?? Any ideas, is it the injectors again or fuel filter, normally i'd start with the cheapest first - fuel filter? Cheers

A diesel
Check there is no air leaking into the pipes to the pump. Lack of fuel causes low rail pressure, so EDC light.

Changed fuel filter as started to get another warning light on left side of dash a yellow petrol pump with 2 lines under it, manual said contaminated fuel filter, changed filter, van is still having problem of edc flashings on and off, van is driving erratic with a jib and puffs of smoke from exhaust, jibbing makes a clonking noise from engine, had injectors checked, ok, but diagnostics picking up a fault now saying a sensor, repeated diagnostics again, same fault coming up, anyone else had this problem.

try changing the centre fuel pipe to the fuel filter.these can chatter and damage the ' o ' ring.people also tend to break the clips on the pipe, this does not help.

EDC fault

I sadly also own a 311 CDI Sprinter which had the same EDC light come on and a plume of smoke at the same time when it wouldn't acelerate. It would tick over okay.
Anyway, I had it recovered to my local garage and they put a diagnostic test on it and it read the seals had gone on the common rail, which were then replaced.
A day later same problem again. This time they suspected injectors. So, I decided to have it done instead by main Mercedes dealer.......oh my god!!! £900 later and two new injectors fitted and it's running fine, for at least the moment, and the work completed comes with a 12 month guarantee. The injectors alone cost £200 each. They did a spill test and checked cam sensor etc.....but it still feels like I've been robbed.
So the moral of this tale is don't try and have it fixed by your local garage, unless of course they are extremely knowledgeable???

For all you budding amateur mechanics......there's money it, doing it for a living!!
