The most surprising part of the GT96 is its drivetrain. Instead of using a traditional internal combustion engine, the coupe is fitted with a micro turbine that generates the electricity needed to drive the car. The specifications are jaw-dropping, at least on paper. The drivetrain generates 1,030 horsepower, enough to send the GT96 from 0 to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds and on to a top speed that’s electronically limited to 217 mph.
The GT96 is projected to boast a driving range of 1,242 miles, and return approximately 1,306 miles per gallon — neither of those figures are typos. If the projections are accurate, the GT96 will be the most efficient car in the world by a long shot. The technology is unproven at best, though Techrules emphasizes that it’s currently testing a prototype on the Silverstone race track in England.

It sounds a little lets say enthusiastic in the reporting, I await the video of this thing hurtling around Silverstone at warp factor speeds sniffing fuel.

Ah right.

The Nio EP 9 though is something else.

Faster around the Ring than:

Nissan GTR Nismo
Ferrari 488
Dodge Viper ACR

It was only 8 secs off a 918!

Sounds more like the writer/reporter is sniffing the fuel!

Flippin 'eck! That really would be great for popping down to shops...
- I wonder what the price range will be? Certainly not cheap...

2.5 to 62 mph! These speed claims nowadays are getting so ridiculous that soon they'll arrive before they start!

It's not a DeLorian

Apparently the Model S can store 1.21GW in its battery. Speaking about it, the chief engineer Dr. E. Brown said "When this baby hits 88mph, amazing things happen!"

Coincidence?

My concern with it all is the pollution involved in making the batteries. Yes the car themselves are Eco Friendly once built.

QUOTE]

but are they? no one actually knows exactly where there power comes from (ie which power station) so it could be a huge dirty coal plant or some eco friendly wind farm somewhere.

as for the battery life and running costs, Nissan claimed, when they were launching the leaf, that the batteries (at a cost of £5k+ from memory) would need replaced something like every 5 years. now, taking the cost of fuel (and obviously its storage in the case of batteries) I did some pretty basic (I'm not a complicated sort of bloke) maths breaking it down to the costs for the average 10k miles per year car user and it worked out that at 40mpg there was still a slight cost advantage over a pre set cycle (Nissan were claiming you would be able to pay for an amount per week/month to 'hire' the batteries, so the cycle would be however long you kept the car under these circumstances) with a regular car, over the cost of running a Leaf, ignoring the range issues and time to recharge them.
then if I were to take into account the cost difference between the Leaf (they were claiming £20k to buy at the time) and its petrol/diesel equivalent (size wise) the Nissan Almera (or you could have gone for a focus, Astra or any competitor) with similar (according to the info I had at the time) for about £7k less. so poor range/recharge rates, £7k more to buy, daily running costs pretty much the same, ok regular engines need a service now and again (2-3 over 3 years) which WONT (unless its MB dealer prices) cost £7k between them. THAT is the main reason theyre not taking off as fast as they could.

turbopete may be right to worry.
Just bear in mind how clean they told us all our diesels are before they decided that they're not really...

It's easy to imagine a big black cloud coming when somebody does all the sums and calculates that over ten years it causes twice as much pollution and kills three times as many people.... or whatever doom and gloom can be dug out.

btw: What ever happened to the steam car? I remember a TV program many years ago with a car that looked like a Triumph Stag and electricity was passed through the water and it with the resultant explosion it shot off with a puff of steam... no gears - like a train, just steam power.

Just found this. Hmm... with the new batteries we have now...

The pollution output from our national grid generating fleet is well known, monitored and measured constantly at source. There are no "unknowns" about it. Bring on more nuclear vice gas and the emissions fall to zero.

If he cant afford $625 working 700 miles from home hes in the wrong job, you don't work that far away for the love of the drive if you know what I mean. I flew 8 times a month for nearly 8yrs for work and it wasn't because I liked airplanes.

read an interesting article concerning batteries using graphene, seems to be a lot of interest around the world.

This development is only a couple of years old, still right at the bleeding edge of scientifically possible. Holds much promise for energy density though.

I doubt that EV's will appeal to the majority of motorists until recharging the batteries can be done in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee.
It seems that that is unlikely to be achievable anytime soon.

I think it depends heavily on management of expectations and achievable range. If customer... education, let's call it... was to hook your car up every night when getting home, but the car could do 1000 miles per charge, it's pretty likely to appeal to most drivers.

Would do for me,

If I could have an EV now with my 160 mile commute 3 times a week at a sensible price without the thought of having to replace the batteries after a few years I'd be in one now, I'm very interested in the technology and look forward to what the future holds.
