I’ve edited the thread title so it makes more sense now (although if members ESP is working they’ll already know...)

Voltage drop under starting duress can throw up odd issues. My E350 has been showing the same warning the last couple of times I've started it, caused by a combination of cold weather and an under par battery voltage due to lack of regular use. If the battery goes flat whilst trying to start the engine it can make the car lose all of it's memory settings and even the windows will fail to close automatically when asked.

ABS sensors….

ESP is far more sensitive to getting decent information about how to keep it on the road... the ABS if it gets some info some time that'll tend to do

My Bikes traction control couldn't cope with life (when rear sensor was a little sad) but the ABS didn't care

Car starts first time every time I don't know about the cruise control as I have never used it, but now the engine management light is lit and the car is in limp home mode are they all connected?

Sounds to me like it needs to have codes read using an MB specific code reader.
There's very little interaction between ESP and limp mode.

Something from the states fixd I think its called it reads the codes and tells you what they mean and what you have to do to put it right, also while you are here do you know where I can find how I can check the transmission oil I've looked under the bonnet and can only find the oil dips tick sorry for being a pain

On my Smart Roadster when the rear ABS sensors couldn't see the reluctor rings (long story ) at the back, the car would barely make it round the block .... obviously ABS & ESP lights lit up.

A lot of us use icarsoft as the cheapest MB specific code readers

There is no oil dipstick. Depending on gearbox there will be a tube with a cap or nothing at all (in which case a check is a top up from below).
If you have the dipstick tube (with either a black or red cap) you need to buy the dipstick as a tool .It does not remain on the tube afterwards!
Dipsticks can be found on eBay amongst other places.

A bad ABS signal will cause both the problem with ESP and a limp home. The gearbox needs a road speed input to function which it picks up from one of the ABS sensors hence the limp mode. The ESP needs road speed signals from each wheel to control traction and braking.
