I have a w124 1989 230e petrol. When the fuel gauge drops below half the needle flickers between half and a quarter empty. As the needle is flickering the fuel light comes on. When more fuel is added rhe light goes off and the needle goes back up.
My question is, is it the sender in the tank ? something electrical ? or something to do with the gauge in the binacle ?

Sounds to me like it's the sender.

Smart + others :)
Pull the sender out and dismantle, clean the very fine wires and slide.

Thank you all for the advice. Red x sounds cheaper than a new sender or garage work, I think I'll try that first.

I would , it did the trick on mine . But its easy to clean them .Hardest part is getting the cover off in the boot to get to the tank.On the top sets this round nut type of retainer . You willn see once your in there if red x fails .I have pictures some place . Send them if i can drop on them .
