I'm now getting the hang of driving my E220d

16gwdxk.jpg

I'm finding the economy display with the throttle / balance / coasting gauges the most fun to use on a long journey to get the best economy.

My run this morning was 14 miles longer than usual because the M42 was closed but I didn't have any delays as per the 61mph average.

Last week I used Sport plus for a 285 mile run and got down to 35mpg average... :p (I averaged 16mpg in my 911 for the same run). I'd only comment for very spirited driving the suspension is a little soft. However tha is less than 5% of my driving.

I'm going to go for >70 mpg next decent run. I get ~60 on the way back as it generally takes an hour longer due to traffic.

45 is about the max I get on a run

But you're running 1.5l bigger than I am. It doesn't matter who's driving and whether it's gingerly or aggressively, 38-40mpg is what my car does. Most odd. I bought it understanding that it should be 60-odd.

What's 450cc per cylinder between friends? :p Either way, my point stands... my E220 isn't delivering the fuel economy it "should" do. Not that it bothers me, it's just annoying.

I got 58.3 0n an E220cdi Bluetec a few weeks ago on a 212 mile run, I was most impressed, but I still like my S320 cdi even with an average of 34 mpg over 3k miles. The reason I had the E was it was hired through the 30year roadside assistance due to a water pump failure prior to a long drive .

No OBC to calculate it on mine but still trying to crack 60mpg tank to tank. I've so far failed to get more than 56 but as that included a very small amount of stop start driving/hills it must be possible to reach 60 on a large trip on long sweeping A roads with favourable traffic (unless I've overestimated how much difference these make).

I don't know why I even care as this car is the most economical I've ever had and more so than I expected.. and diesel has gone down in price and is now at nice 90cents/litre...still, I think it's just the knowing it probably can be done that makes me want to do it.

With careful application of throttle and brake I had 60mpg for the 4 mile commute back last night and 53 for the 4 mile commute in this morning.

I've got this E220d for economy / comfort / safety so I'm going to push the economy as far as I can go with it. If I start sitting on the motorways at 56 I know I'll have gone too far.

I've noted already a difference between setting the cruise at 73 rather than 76. I'm never in a hurry on the way to work so don't need to push the limits of "legal" speed.

Mercedes have 72.4 mpg as a combined figure so I'm going to go for it and see how close I can get. My Smart is only averaging 55...

Over half an entire Smart engine per cylinder!
Mine as follows:
Smart - 799cc or 266.33 per cylinder
E220 - 1950cc or 487.5 per cylinder
911 - 3,824cc or 637.33 per cylinder
Caravelle - 2,461cc or 492.2 per cylinder
Landy - 2,495cc or 623.33 per cylinder
CBR 600 - 599cc or 149.75 per cylinder
R1200 GSA - 1,170cc or 585 per cylinder
NTV 650 - 647cc or 323.5 per cylinder

Perhaps I should bore out the Landy and fit the Porsche pistons?

Mine is a 1.8 petrol so probably quite different to what most people in this thread have, but I have never managed to get more than 43mpg.

I did a very long run recently and was excited at the prospect of perhaps getting 50mpg but it just didn't happen. That said the car was fully loaded with luggage and passengers and I did 90mph on occasion.

But whether the car is empty or not, and whether I do 60mph or 90mph I never seem to get much more than 40mpg. I guess the fact that the consumption bar chart only goes up to 40mpg should have been a giveaway :)

What does it do in local use, say journeys of 3 or 4 miles with a bit of stopping and starting from cold? That's where diesels are usually pretty bad.

Mine is pretty bad with that kind of journey tbh. In fact most of my journeys are short, start stop journeys (I live in a very congested city) which is one reason I didn't opt for a diesel (dpf, etc)

From cold, 3 miles with traffic and stop starting I would get somewhere in the region of 25 - 28mpg.

A slightly longer journey, say 6 or 7 miles, on a Saturday or Sunday when the roads are a little more clear would get around 30mpg.

Since I've had it, over the last 8,000 miles or so, the overall average from the trip computer is 29.8mpg and I've been monitoring it manually and this is about spot on.

I've also noticed the mpg is a fair bit better now that the weather is warm, compared with when I got the car in October last year when it was cold. In the cold weather I seemed to struggle to even get 30mpg whereas now it's a more regular occurrence.

If you want to get the best economy out of your car (regardless of engine) then drive the car as if you have no brakes.

You'll soon learn to feather the throttle and slow without braking until absolutely necessary to safely stop. You'll also see the economy increase by quite a bit.

As my ole Pappy taught me - an egg on the brake pedal. Great advice.
