A friend of mine has just inherited a 1983 280SL with its original engine which has done 40000 miles,what is the recommended fuel for this model.

It will run best on Shell Optimax or similar but as long as it's not thrashed at speed over long distances then regular fuel will be fine. My personal experience of using octane enhancers (Millers) in this engine is that the valves coke up.
