Recently I have noticed that my fuel gauge does not read full when I have filled the tank. I usually read the onboard computer before refuelling so that I have an idea of how much it should take to fill the tank completely, however I never seen to need as much as readings suggest. My indie has suggested that the fuel sensor in the tank may be faulty. Any comments. W210 E200K, 2001

It could be the fuel sender unit in the tank or the instrument cluster or the wiring or winston churhills reletives revisiting, no just joking. Change the sender unit in the tank. But have the wiring checked out first.

Thank you for your comments. Something for me to work on over the next few weeks.

Tank could be collapsing due to charcoal filter system blocked. Hidden in wing and often do not get changed when they should.

Thats a good point, how often do we see that mentioned, hardly ever. Is this a long term service item ?

According to Haynes the Evaporative emission control charcoal canister should be renewed every 30,000mls or 2 years. Has anyone actually done this or had it done as a service item or had a tank collapse as a result of not doing it ?.

I do know of a few where they have had to replace them as they have rusted through.

The simple answer to that is yes, both with MB and BMW. But its not a common problem and most cars can go thousands of miles without this problem. Having said that, BMW are recommending the charcoal canisters be changed on a (regular basis), what that is supposed to mean I can only guess. This is not authorotive information, just something brought up in a casual conversation with a friend who works for a BMW concessionair. In my experience its not the Charcoal cannister that causes a problem, its normally the EVAP valve.

Do I have one of these on mine?

I remember it went on my last car, and I replaced it, but I don't know if diesels have them.
