hi again,
well as i said the air system itself doesnt have any smell to it, what im smelling in the car is the smell thats in the engine bay after the car is warmed up . if i turn the ignition on and turn the ac up it has the usual nice fresh air con kinda smell but this soon goes as the engine bay warms it seeps inside :/
I am having the same problem with my citan, after 4 years of thinking I had a medical condition (total exhaustion sleeping every day for about two hours after driving it)visiting numerous Docters and specialists with all results coming back clear I decided to put a carbon monoxide detector in my cab that went off within minutes, the van has no warning lights or faults on the exhaust system. My garage can’t see anything wrong with it and can’t understand why fumes getting into the cab, the van is only 8 years old and can’t be driven now as so dangerous to drive and I can’t trade in or sell as I couldn’t pass on to another person, if you look at other forums it seems to be a common problem with Mercedes. No strong smells in front cab only put tester in to check after wife was sick when in for an hour journey, worth while putting a tester in cab to see what fumes it is.

@Johnmatthews40 Have you tried blocking the end of the exhaust system with a rag and your hand briefly as that will soon indicate if you have an exhaust leak somewhere that is not obvious in normal use? You may need someone to listen at the engine end.

Top tip wait till it is dark and you are not surrounded by any bright lights start the engine lift the bonnet and shine a torch around the engine bay to see if any fumes/smoke is present.

Could it be that the exhaust itself is OK but the seal on the rear door(s) is goosed? I ask because a while back I borrowed my Dad's Kia Sedona for a tip run, but I couldn't quite shut the rear door/tailgate, so I tied it down and off I drove. Within a mile or so, the car was filling up with exhaust fumes ... I assume airflow etc over a flat back end was pushing the exhaust back into the cabin. I was almost at the tip before it was a problem .....

Hi mate the van went into the garage at the weekend for the mechanic to look over it, he checked it all over done the block the exhaust and checked van thoroughly all over, there is no obvious sooty marks in engine compartment no leaks any where in the exhaust , there is no smell coming from it that’s obvious in cab, we drove for 3 min and carbon monoxide detector went instantly to 1500 ppm, by the time we got back to the garage it was at 2500 ppm he has no idea why this is happening all pipes look the way they should , no sign of any leaks anywhere, I’m waiting for merc to get back to me to see what they say but to us it looks like a fault with the van.

In that case and as you know others have reported similar I would be making the Health and Safety Executive and Local Trading Standards aware of your CO readings and see if they are interested. And tell MB you are doing this

You don't have a diesel heater on the van do you?

I’m having the same issue, it’s developed over the past few weeks with my A180d. It’s going in this week so I’ll see what they say.

Are there any flexi joints on the exhaust system. sometimes they can be fractured but no blowing noise is present. I used to run a Jaguar V6 diesel and it was a common problem with them.
