does anyone know of a gearbox failure or reason for it after a front end shunt? The insurers won’t cover it as they say it is not connected. My mechanic thinks that damage could have been done to the cooling system causing debris to wreck it a couple of weeks later, any ideas, thanks an expensive problem!

You need to check if the atf - gearbox fluid is cooled as it passes through the radiator. If so it can take water in to the auto gear box when it gets damaged .

If it is the fluid cooled by rad, then a front end accident which damaged rad will certainly be connected, you do not say what the fault is, is it a mechanical fault or electrical

Very helpful thanks, the gearbox was damaged by a foreign body we think. It’s done about 130k original gearbox. I’ll pass these thoughts on to the mechanic who has the car. He thought it was due to shunt but unfortunately didn’t talk to the independent assessor, probably wasn’t wanted too I guess

Was the cooling ( main ) radiator damaged in the shunt, and had to be replaced during the repairs?
