Welcome buddy , not many manual gearboxes on here , but I would think clutch is a good start point . Any garage should easily diagnose it

If you pump the clutch, does it get easier

Does it crunch whilst selecting reverse ? If so it could be clutch drag.

As above. Will it go in and out of gear without the engine running? if so its almost certainly the clutch not disengaging properly.

I'm one of the few with a manual gearbox too.

It does not grind getting into gear it's just hard to select reverse and any other Gear so far so I am thinking it is the clutch that is wearing how much for a standard clutch for it then boys

Doesn't sound like clutch drag then to me if there's no grinding when selecting reverse. Usually if the clutch is dragging there is still partial drive to the box which causes hard selection of first gear and grinding when going into reverse. First won't grind usually because the synchromesh prevents that. Reverse doesn't have synchronesh, or at least didn't when I used to have manual cars.

Well upon further investigation I've learnt that many modern manual vehicles do indeed have synchromesh on reverse gear. You live and learn. I have no idea whether Mercedes manual gearboxes have this feature.
Therefore, I guess it's entirely possible that clutch drag is the cause of the op's difficult engagement of gears, and the silent engagement of reverse could be masking it. Of course there might be another cause but my money would be on clutch drag.
I have no idea how much a new clutch would be. Best get a diagnosis and cost from a good indy.

If its going into and out gear while stationary, with the engine stopped, then its unlikely to be the box. If it's "biting" while changing gear's with the engine running, then it's the clutch not "disconnecting" properly. It's still connecting the running engine to the gearbox.

If it has synchromesh in reverse as many modern gearboxes do it won't grind going into reverse if it's clutch drag.

OP, have you done the checks suggested before spending a fortune on a clutch that may not fix it?

So if it's not the clutch what should I get the Mechanic to look at what are the parts on the gearbox can fail if there's no going in reverse or any of the gears as it's just a little bit hard to select one
