Anybody fancy a weekend trip to German/Dutch Christmas Markets (I am thinking Aachen, Koln, Maastrcicht).
Possible dates w/e 2nd December or 16th December i.e. complement Christmas meeal weekend.

Also thinking of May trip to WW2 battlefields. Again, welcome expressions of interest.

As Cole has shown, this contimnetal driving is good fun!

    Nicholas

Just back from a few days away.
For a weekend trip, German markets would be Aachen (particularly good) and Cologne, along with Valkenburg and Mastericht in Netherlands. Basically all accessible by motorway in low lying araes of Germany - so hopefully no snow drifts etc. Lived in the area for several years with never a need for snow tyres or chains. But if necessary we could adjust route for weather.
    Also hapy to take pasengers.

Appreciate the interest and will post a date in the next few days.

sorry guys, my fault for the off topic part of the thread, the advise though has come from one of my field engineers living in Germany, saying that he does drive around 55k a year so may just be on the side of caution when I spoke to him about it.

back on topic, we may be interested depends if we are traveling out to Slovakia to see the wife's family this Christmas. so put us down as a possible.

Will say, Nicolas is a great chap to drive with over there, sensible driver and very knowledgeable if anyone wants a driver instead of driving them selves, enjoyed his company earlier this year on a trip!

Looking forward to the dates being set Nick......

I have taken coach to Aachen many times and never had to carry snow chains or put winter tyres on.

But interested in Normandy in may (although been there many times also)

    Just a suggestion Nicholas
If you are looking at going to St mare eglis Grandcamp massy is a must, see this http://www.maisybattery.com/ not very well known it is a German battery that was just covered up at end of war until an English man purchased the land and started uncovering it,you can walk around the battery on the same ground the Germans walked.

    Thanks Cole for the list.
    Proposed itinerary for the trip:

    Friday 1st

    - depart 09.50 Euroshuttle from Folkestone
    - drive to Maastricht, approx 3hours, 200 miles of motorway (lunch break at services or detour via Leuven)
    - check into Hotel Van der Van Valk Maastricht https://www.hotelvandervalkmaastricht.nl/ (ask for rooms on quiet side)
    - visit to Maastricht for evening meal

    Saturday 2nd

    - morning visit to Valkenburg aan de Geul for Christmas Market and Christmas caves and lunch
    - afternoon visit to Aachen Christmas market and evening meal
    - return to hotel/evening visit to Maastricht Christmas Fair

    Sunday 3rd

    depending on weather:
    - visit to Drielanden Punt where three countries meet so you can holfd hands and dance round a border post going through Belgium, Germany and Netherlands
    or
    - Maastricht river trip
    or
    - Brussels Automuseum
    -then
rteurn to Calais for evenig meal and visit to wine and beer superstore (if required!)
    - Catch 20.20 Euroshuttle back to Folkestone

Most of the driving will be on motorways but Saturday will be an opportunity for smaller local roads but nothing too demanding for novice continental drivers. But I am happy to take passengers if you prefer to ride shotgun.

    Everyone welcome to join us.

Indeed, as Cole says, continental driving is great fun. We’ve been driving over there for more than 25 years, sometime two or three times a year. However, the downside is that you have to be aware of different regulations in different countries and there are two rules relating to Germany that you ought to be aware of.

Firstly, there is a general rule that you must use winter tyres in Germany. There are no specific dates but the requirement is weather dependent which includes ice and black ice, frost, snow and slush.
    https://www.wbs-law.de/eng/road-traffic-law-eng/law-winter-tyres-germany-48118/

You may be lucky when you are there but it all depends on the weather in December!

Secondly, many German towns have Low Emission Zones which effectively exclude anything that is not Euro 4 or better. So this may be an issue for anyone taking a classic.
    http://www.tuev-sued.de/auto_fahrzeuge/feinstaub-plakette/feinstaubplakette_ausland/england

The bad news is that Aachen has such a zone which includes anywhere within the ring road so any car entering the City has to display a sticker.
    http://www.aachen.de/DE/stadt_buerg...ltzone/translation/GB_short_introduction.html

The stickers you need to remain legal cost 15€ and it is very easy to order from the Tuev-Sud website:
    https://www.tuev-sued.de/auto_fahrzeuge/feinstaub-plakette/bestellen/england
You just fill in a simple online form and upload a scan of your VRD. Mine then turned up in the post two or three days later. The only problems was getting the resolution of the scan low enough to keep the .pdf file size within their upload size restriction!

We can’t make this trip but hope you all have a great time. Sorry to “rain on your parade” with this extra info but I hope it helps avoid problems when you are there.

Likely unable to make the morning train, more likely a late afternoon one. Not sure yet.

More than likely, it really depends what time I can clock off on the Friday- I'll have to see. It'd be nice to travel in convoy.
