In the cold weather it takes a few efforts for the car to start. From my research it suggested that one or more glow plugs are faulty.

This morning I used a multi meter to check the resistance of each plug. The were all reading the same, 0.9 ohms. The meter read 0.3 when not connected to anything so my understanding is that you minus this figure from the reading. Therefore, each plug is reading 0.6 ohms, which i believe is OK.

The battery read 12.5v when off. Which again i understand to be OK.

The last thing I can think off is the glow plug relay. I have read this guide http://dieselgiant.com/glowplugrepair.htm but my problem is I can't see the plug relay in my C207 E350.

Can anyone point me in the right direction from the attached pictures.

On the E320cdi (similar engine ) it is a black plastic thingy that is on the front face of the engine , just left of centre . If you eBay the part so you can see a pic of it , I'm sure you will find it ... I don't think any of your pics show the very front of the engine , just above the belt .

See attached and marked in red if I'm not mistaken.

Yep , thats the one.

20mins will see it replaced , the front fixing has a retaining nut so dont drop it and the rear is into a tapped hole so dont worry about the nut falling as there is none.

I paid £120 for a genuine MB one from my local indy.

I'm sure that one of the Main dealers was doing a trade in for GP Relays a few weeks ago if you took the defective one in . Maybe someone else will remember who it was ?

Thanks guys. I'll hopefully get a look under the bonnet later this week.

Don't know if you can actually test the relay to see if it is working or not. Like in the link above?

I just want to make sure it's the relay before I go hunting for a new one and install it.

These go quite often.

Feels like there is air in the fuel lines or something.

Does you glow plug light come back on after you drive off?
You know the plugs are fine, so if it does it has to be your relay.

Most diesels don't even need glow plugs to start in our temperatures, but the 3 litre diesel really does need them working properly.

I have had to replace the relay on two cars now with that engine.

There is a superseded relay now, the one that you have looks like the old type which is known for its problems.

The new relay may have a different part number, therefore don't go ordering from the same part number.

I think this is the one that you need. (I picked the first one in the search, but you could probably find one for cheaper)

I know I keep saying this (and I'm not on commission I promise!) but do contact MB Grangemouth, they are a forum supporter and have particularly good deals on parts such as Glow plug relays. Fraser or Steven on 01324 686002. They just need your reg or VIN number and they'll match up the one you need

Why not check for volts at the glowplugs ?

An assistant would be handy.

Never thought to enquire for parts at Jeep/Chrysler, might be a good shout...

I have this problem too, but my glow plug light stays on for about 20 seconds and then flashes intermittently for a while. Is that likely to be glow plugs or the relay?

Cheers

Hi there,

Newby alert...

Mine has been suffering with this for a while. If the glow plug light comes back on after the car has started and then flashes intermittently does that mean the plugs need replacing?

Thanks in advance

Nigel

Simple! Found the answer in this forum. Switch key to pos.2 before starting, check output of relay via 12V test lamp or multimeter and if one of the four does not glow, an inside fusible link is broken. On this forum one chap drilled (saw is better) the relay open, noticed the fuse is blown, so he soldered a 30A fuse in via wires going to the outside.

Most likely a dodgy glow plug caused the relay to fail. Best to change all four. Use WD-40 and a hot engine to not snap off the pencil-thin plug.
