Ah... Its an Italian one (Kompresso). To me that looks a bit scruffy for the mileage but can't put my finger on it. Its also a pretty low spec and has the m271 engine (google m271 timing chain).

This is the sort of info I’m interested in!

Scruffy for mileage can mean: clocked

M271. Fracture split con rods = cool.

Not entirely enamoured with the thought of a four pot, but my w202 c180 was bullet proof and revvy. That was a manual though.

Your c180 was also an M111 engine....

The m271 has well documented instances of timing gear/chain failure (= not cool!)

Yeah I know it was a different motor. I was purely talking about my prejudice against 4 pots

And overpriced!
I had the 271 engine in my first Mercedes - knew nothing then and didn’t realise how lucky I was when I traded it after a trouble free year

The only 4 cylinder Merc I’ve had was the C180. Swapped it for a C250 turbo diesel which was brilliant. Still had to do the typical OM60X issues though. Any issues with the m111 could be solved by unplugging the MAF which has strangely worked on the SL too.

Does anyone have any real life experience of the fuel consumption of the 240, 320, and 500 early w211 variants? I can guess 18mpg for the 500 as that’s what my 129 does - although it can easily achieve mid 20s on a run.

My w210 E240 estate (which is actually a 2.6 litre V6) will return in excess of 30mpg on a trip if driven sensibly (strangely it seems more economical when loaded than when empty?).
On my regular commute to work (40 miles of mixed country lanes and A roads but no motorways or dual carriageways and little traffic) it will return around 26mpg.

Under the same driving the r230 returns about 26mpg on a run and about 21mpg on the commute.
I realise neither are the same as a 211 but they will hopefully be indicative of what to expect.
Big petrol engines need a longish run to get the economy up - on my commute overall economy is still improving by the time I stop.

Cheers for that

I’m considering an E320 at the moment and with my economy in the w124 coming out at 27mpg and there being short journeys - the other half will mostly be driving to and from school, so the potential for a turbo diesel to soot up bothers me. When we borrowed my dads w220 320 CDI that was getting sub 30s or possibly 25mpg on the short stop start stuff.

I think a 320 would be closer to the 240 than the 500 for economy. The 240 feels slightly underpowered for the car so has to work quite hard in stop start driving.

I’ve ruled out the 500 as it was seemingly over the top (but a really cool concept) to have 2 5.0 V8s. Also our family is expanding in a matter of weeks and the additional running costs are better spend on other things.

Nah, I have 2 x 5.0L V8’s, and if I get my way, there will be a 3rd

I must be getting sensible. I worked out that the combined power output of my fleet would stay the same if I sold the w123 andw124 (123 already gone) and replaced it with a 320

Baby Mercedes.... ;)

Hahahahaha, that’s what some people say when they have a mini - “a baby bmw” so I’m assuming you mean a smart car.

I suppose you have to offset the two V8s somehow.

A mate had one as his first car and despite destroying it in every way imaginable he loved it. He did get ribbed though

My commute consists of the train - it keeps my driving less impatient. I’ve commuted for over a decade doing 30k a year so it’s been nice to not have to deal with the stress and impoliteness of commuting on the roads.

Anyway. Set to go up to Scotland tomorrow to potentially pick up the new car, the w124 is now on eBay for sale.

Just for reference
