Granny Pam welcome to the forum . Just make sure you take someone with you to look over it first .Thats if its second hand . And if you need to know anything about your A class then just ask . You need to fill in your profile asap so every one knows what car you have .

I must admit I am confused , petrol, diesel , A160 A180 . What is the difference. I know I want automatic , and not the new low one . I want comfort and easy to get in and out ,power when I need it , but I can't decide

Hello and welcome, Pam!

I too like the elevated driving position, and my wife loves the effortless access, of the W/C169 A-class (particularly with the wider doors of the 3-door coupé C169 model).

Personally I prefer petrol, but it will depend on your driving pattern, and where you are in the country.

If the budget allows, go for a facelift models, 2008-2009 onwards, to avoid rust issues with the earlier ones ...

Hello and welcome.

The 160, 180 etc describe engine size in decilitres (1.6, 1.8 litre). Diesel gives generally better fuel efficiency but is a bit noisier than petrol.

I hadnt realised about wider doors , so I will look at those , I am looking for 2009 or later before they became lower . Thank you

Yes, the 169 model came in 5-door and 3-door variants, designated W169 and C169 respectively (for Wagen and Coupé), and the 3-door version has wider doors, which are great, but if you often need to carry passengers at the back, it's inconvenient, as you'd have to fold the front seats, for them to get there ...

Here's a couple of pics to make it clear:

You're quite right, the period you're looking at is 2009-2012, before the next generation of the A-class, designated W176, came out (first ones were delivered in 2012, so can't go by just the year alone - check the model code).

The easiest way to spot a facelift 169, is to look at the door mirrors - the "square" ones is the facelift, the round, oval shaped ones would be on a 2004-2008 models.

;)Hi Pam, welcome to the forums, again I know little of the A class therefore I suggest you just sell your house, cash in the pension and blow it all on the new E63S 4 matic edition 1, you will NOT be disappointed :):p

When I bought my A200 (from a small independent dealer, not MB), it came with an RAC Gold Warranty (3 months) - it turned out to be a brilliant thing, as it paid for a/c condenser replacement, and one new tyre - over £700 all in.

Highly recommended.

These are ~ 2 litre engines that are detuned to produce varying power levels. So for instance one might have an E220 or 250 (same engine, one with a different setup to produce more power). Similarly the E270, 320 and 350 all have the same engine...

For the [facelift] A-class W169, all diesel variants are the same 1,991cc engine, but the petrol ones are different engines - 1,498cc for the A160 and 1,699 for the A180.

The lineup also changed with the facelift, basically leaving only A160 and A180 for both diesel and petrol, with BlueEfficiency option for each:

There were more variants for the 2004-2008 lineup, including A200 & A200 Turbo petrol with 2,034cc engine, and A200 CDI diesel models:

Hi Craig,
So, would I notice much difference on 2 lt 160 to a 180 ? Petrol or diesel ?
I am looking to spend about £6500 . I notice a lot have quite high mileage , I won't be doing a load of miles , so should I worry about this? .is there any particular problem I should watch out for?
Hopefully trying some today , probably come back with a b class lol

Thanks everyone for your help

In that case an ML V8 is just up your street. 500, 55 or 63.

Or really, an ML320 will be all you'd need :)
