I am struck by the paradox of a Government currently prepared to pump billions of pounds into the automotive industry in an effort to stimulate manufacture – and therefore presumably sales – of new cars, while at the same time doing everything possible in the form of punitive taxation, charges and fines to discourage their use.
Moreover we are all expected to be racked with guilt that every time we start an engine the planet moves a step nearer doomsday.

The logical deduction is that we should all be prepared to buy at least one new car a year, but only to sit it in our garage or on our drive (or possibly park it on the road, thereby generating revenue from fines for parking and failure to display a tax disc).

As enthusiasts for a (foreign) quality marque, I suspect that the majority of us own cars considerably older than one year – so we don’t seem to be doing our bit…. :(

On the other hand, maybe we have a higher than average number sitting in the garage being regularly polished or lovingly restored – so maybe we are the saviours of the planet ……..? :)

Very good point you are making -- its anything for a "nice little earner" in my opinion --
I find it obscene our local hospital car park charges are now min £3 (first 20mins are free) You are hard pushed to get from the ticket barrier to park up walk inside and wait at the automated paying machine in 20 mins - every motorist who visits has to pay).
Yet it raises massve revenue from drivers -They seem to want us to all have cars to get as much as they can out of us --other not needed earners and over taxed rip off M.O.T.s ? £50 now --print outs and an hour minimum to do a simple 10 min job--speed camreas are now "Safety" cameras when you get the fine it goes on and on .
I am stopping now as its getting my blood pressure up again . Teddy
