Having spoken to MissyD and others I would like to propose a GTG to Ieper (Ypres) to visit various WWI battlefields next April.

Ieper is 75 minutes drive from Calais by motorway/A roads.

Possible timetable for a day event is to leave Folkestone around 8 am (Eurotunnel) and returning from Calais around 10.30 pm into Folkestone.

So travel to meet for coffee around 11.00 am at Sanctuary Wood - café + site of trenches
Lunch at café at Hooge Crater Museum
Afternoon visit to Flanders Fields Museum, Ieper (Ypres)
    early evening meal in Ypres
8 pm - Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate, Ypres
8.30 departure back to UK to catch 10.20 departure to Folkestone

(People can also arrive Friday and/or stay Saturday night - Ieper is a friendly town with lots of English/English descendants living there).

Living in Kent, am happy to offer 3 car share places - but a nice easy drive!

If there is an interest I will post more specific details.

    Nicholas

Sounds like a good trip. There is a brilliant Flanders Fields museum in Ypres. Let me know the dates.

Nick, would be interested but could you advise the dates as soon as you know. Having never driven on the continent I'm a bit apprehensive about the experience ... could I follow someone?

It's a piece of pi$$. No problem at all, takes you about ten minutes to get used to it and then you just have to take car to give way to the left at roundabouts. Seriously Dave, it's no bother at all.

As Micheal Caine said in the Italian Job " over here they drive on the wrong side of the road" :D

Not drove in Europe since the 90's so I would be up for this .

    If you're into military history.

I've been to Bastogne (made famous by Band of Brothers to those with no military history interest).

There is a very good museum there with a monument in the shape of an American Star. You can go on top of his monument and each point of the star is orientated towards a specific point in the battle of the bulge.

There is also Foy which is about 30-40mins drive from there if memory serves me. This is the village that Easy Coy occupied the woods outside of. You can visit the woods and there are still shell scrapes in there. It's also eerily quiet.

You also must visit Nuts City (Bastogne itself) which is named after the famous response from General McAuliffe to Ze Germans when they asked the Americans to surrender.

They have a few monuments but one of them is an old Panzer tank which has been hit with an Anti Tank round. It shows the size of the hole that your body gets sucked through if you're unlucky enough to be in one when hit by an AT rd. You have small hands if you can get more that two fingers in it.

All three places are well worth a visit and Nuts City has some really nice Cafes and Restaurants.

I couldn't comment on price as I last went in 2006.
