date your vehicle easily

there are other ways of confirming vehicle age as most plastic components in the car are date stamped ie ash trays plastic covers these will generally always match the car reg and are used by police in spotting ringged cars.

May be worth checking these in your vehicle

OK this is where we stand at the moment

The dealer called me as I asked for an exchange as to what car I want.
I said exactly what I have paid for (but an 04 proper), like for like. I said I will be reasonable and wait for the car as i apperciate that such a car will not be available immediately.
He called me back to say that I will have to pay a few thousand extra, I said i am being reasonable and expect what I paid for.

He then said I pay extra or get a full refund and they collect the car and said I will have lost nothing (hmmm insurance, transfer of cherished plates, a phone for the car, my time travelling to get the car, the fact the car is STILL at my local dealer as they have found another fault and it will take them 10 days to get parts, the fact I am without a car, the 3 days i have had off work.....and i have lost nothing........)...i think they will have lost nothing

what do you say to that

Have a look again on the site again http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/index.html?lng=eng
and put in your vin plate No WDB2200252A332004. Have a look under the option number
803 Change of year of model, last figure shows new model year
I don’t understand why this is, If you say it’s a 2002 model why does the vin no list it as a 04 model. you could always ask your dealer to explain this to you

I would also say:

"I asked for an 04 car and paid you for an 04 car so why is an 04 car going to cost any more than what I've already paid you?

"In fact, depriciation over the last couple of ?months? means if anything the same car should cost me less. Now stop trying to back out of the deal and get me the car I paid you for. Or are you saying that you knew it wasn't the car I asked you for, Mr Mercedes dealer?"

Got to be worth a try?

I don't know what you paid, but if an equivalent motor is a few k more than the orginal cost of yours then presumably it was a bit of a bargain? If so, you didn't pay for an 04 proper so can't really expect them to provide one. If you had paid the going rate they would be able to supply a replacement, or you'd simply take their cheque to the competitor and pick one up from there. They aren't going to offer you your money back if they can put you in a car. If they are offering you your money back, you can't really expect any more than that. Yes you do lose the cost of the phone and number transfer etc, but thats minimal in the overall cost and you do carry some responsibility. You saw the car, tested it, bought it and were happy initially. At the end of the day it is an 04 car, just not an 04 build.

Hi everyone

the latest update for those interested

I have now complained to everyone possible, the MD of Pendragon (the franchise operator). DCUK - who in my opinion are not very good (a load of call operatos who dont really help) and Trading standards.

To keep you updated, they have offered me a full refund on this car, as they accept they have made many mistakes.
I have been looking at like for like 04 proper cars but they are indeed 4K more and the spec doesnt come close, no electric rear blind, no vented seats, no TV...
I have complained more and now they are offering I can keep the car and get another years warranty.
I think i should ask them for 2 years warranty and a free service, oh and the latest navigation CD.

what do you think, any advice would be appreciated.

The vin describes the car as Delivery Date 11/11/02 to dealer (553) in the Netherlands. I would take the money and go and find a newer one. It will always be an Import from 2002, and you may well pay the price when you come to sell.
There are a lot of cars out there and some Mercedes Speciallists have some really good cars with remainder of MB warranty at a lot less than MB Dealer prices.

I would get a full refund and look for a car from another MB dealer. Sounds like the car was a dog, and more importantly, I wouldn't give the dealer the satisfaction of having ripped you off.

The TV bit you can almost forget, once we are digital it will not work.

I suppose you could always move to an area that will be switched off last

This has been a really interesting post...and it's not over yet!
We should be running a poll...take the money or keep the car! That reminds me of...take the money or open the box. If my memory serves me, that was Micheal Myles catchphrase on Take your Pick! Anyway...I digress...IMHO I would take the money and run. Sounds like the history of the car is shrouded in mystery. Also...resale, resale, resale. You have to consider resale value. I agree with the previous comments...there are loads of nice Mercs out there...and this does not sound like one of them! I would be very wary of this one. Buyer beware!
