I usually sit in the car lunchtime and listen to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2. After about half an hour the radio switches off and when switched on again will only stay on for less than five minutes. Because of this I have lately I have been listening to Radio Norfolk which stays on for the whole hour without switching itself off.

Now, both stations are broadcast from Norwich and as far as I know from the same building. What is going on ??

Low battery cutoff.
The battery likely just had more left in it when you listened to the alternative channel.

Sounds likely.
When I had my defective battery, if I ran the stereo for 10 mins with the engine off, it would say something like Comand will switch off in 2 minutes or start engine.

Once the new battery was installed, that cured it.
Obviously it couldnt run the 650w HK amp without the alternator helping out.
