Slk heated seats are prone to failure and some need a new seat cover as the element is sown into the cover,
I,ve just replaced the backrest foam on a r170.not the easyest of jobs.

I believe the seat base is not as hard as the backrest.

Sometimes it is possible to find the broken wire and replace it, I have the upholstery removing instructions somewhere

hi simon, you will find the seat base has 3x seperate elements wired in series - so if one fails they all do. the two side elements are available without the upholstery, and not too expensive, so if it is one or both of these that has failed you can fit new. otherwise you may as well find the broken section (easy, find the burn mark in the padding) and repair it as the base center and back sections are extremely expensive.

the last side element i fitted for the base on a 171 was £71 +vat - not cheap, but the other elements in the center base and back are fortunes as they are stitched into the covers.

In the same boat myself, having recently bought another SLK i tried the seats first and the base did heat up, but now tried it properly it just gets a little warm equal to #1 setting
Having bought from a non franchised dealer the best i could expect is to have a cheap after market heater fitted and properly begger up the seat base as well

Its not something that worries me too much but is annoying
If you do find the break in the element how do you connect the two ends

Malcolm any chance of any instructions on the cover SLK 171 57 AMG
many thanks

By soldering in a short new piece of suitable wire.
