Here's a great site offering huge choice from loads of Merc dealers and independents. Scouring it will give you a good feel for what's around, price etc.

Quite near you I bought my Merc from Robinsons of Cambridge. Ask for Mike Haslop. Helpful guy.

What age you looking for and how much is the max you want to spend? Before you start over 90% of C's and E's are automatic. Merc autos are so good with tiptronic and kickdown you can play tunes on them. Get more than the cost back on resale. Merc alone seem able to get same performance and fuel economy - near enough- from autos as from manuals. In addition, the foot operated handbrake suits auto fine but is horrid with manual. Drive an auto and see. Most never look back. But if you don't like auto, then I'd go for something other than Merc. Hill starts with foot operated handbrakes are no joke. Full MBSH is worth having. You get 30 year rust guarantee and thirty year breakdown cover. Worth a lot.:)

You didn't say what age of car you were looking at. The later cars were facelifted, most of the improvements being inside, adopting the saloons dash.

Another note is that as the cars have been progressively developed to suit emissions regs the fuel consumption has suffered (why if the car emits less does it consume more - doesn't balance to me). You'll probably find the consumption disappointing compared to your Golf, although I just find I sit back, enjoy the drive and don't worry about it.

Looking at a 51 plate with approx 40-50k on the clock budget of around 10k i have found a few at this price looking on autotraders website.

I am one of those people who will travel for the right car though, travelled 150 miles to get my Golf and took me a couple of months huntinng to find it.

What sort of fuel consumpton do you guys get out of a 220 ?? My Golf currently gives 48 - 60 to the gallon depending on how and where i drive or would i be better with a 270 with a better power to weight ratio ??

Cheers

Europe requires more and more filters to reduce particulate emissions. Takes more and more power to get through all the filtration.

Fuel econmy on the C class is good for its size. GolfGT 2.0tdi DSG has combined fuel economy of 43.5 while the 2.0 litre C class Sport Coupe gives 43.5 in manual and 40.5 in auto. The 220cdi is hardly different at 42.8 manual and 40.4 auto.
