My wife’s 200 SLK R171 has been the apple of my eye since we got it. But she put petrol in this morning and it won’t start. The AA have attended and have checked fuses, ”switching” and fuel delivery, but haven’t checked somewhere they can’t get at below the supercharger. When you unlock it then turn the key ready to turn it over there’s a rapid clicking brrrrrrrr noise for a second from the boot but nothing visible at the site in the boot. The sound isn’t normally there. Help please!! Deciding whether to book recovery. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds like the fuel pump has packed in (under car near boot), runs for a second or so to prime the system then shuts off till engine cranked.

Thanks for that but the brrrrrrrr is higher up inside the boot unless the sound is transferring through....?

Without being there its impossible to diagnose accurately. I suspect it may need to go to a decent indy to sort it out.

Yeah thanks for your attention. It’s in Washington Service and Auto Electrics now. Fingers crossed they don’t take my eyes out.

Other research has led to suspect K40 relay/fuse; any thoughts please?

I don't think a K40 issue would lead to a noise in the boot.

Thanks for that, I take your point. I’m just clutching at straws because we want her fettled without facing bankruptcy. Just about to ring Washington Auto Electrics for update; will post the diagnosis when she’s fixed to help others facing a similar problem

The fuel pump in the r171 sits inside the tank and is accessed through the boot. The internal covering in the boot needs to be removed then there is a metal ring with 6 nuts around it. This is removed (filter) and the pump is behind it.

Pump is item 20. Filter is item 50. OEM pump is £64

If it is the pump it shouldn't be a fortune.

I do appreciate your advice LostKiwi, just got back from WAE who say that three diagnostic machines aren’t recognising the ECU and there is oil in the connectors and allegedly down the loom at the front next to the variable valve timing units. Discussions had re cleaning the looms in case electrical current isn’t getting where it should, and stripping out the ECU to look for defects then ?send it away for testing. WAE say the noise from the fuel pump is normal, it’s just a bit odd how I’ve never heard it until yesterday........? Oh God............

OK - M271 engine....

Oil in the loom is common though usually results in O2 sensor issues. There are oil blockers available for the loom from MB part number A271 150 27 33 .
They plug into the cam position sensor wires and prevent oil migration. The cam sensors if leaking that badly could probably do with changing.
