The OVP relay Could show the correct voltage when you stop and start the car.

If you are driving along and there is a dry joint that fails for just one second, that will can turn on the Check Engine lamp, but when it rights itself it will not turn the Check Engine lamp off, as this can only be done with the key.

I thought that your relay was a newish one, it is not. The cover is held on by the punch holes on each corner.

Its very hard for me to tell anyone to go and buy a new one due to the complex nature of car electronics.

Another way is to put the meter on any 87 pin, start the car and and give the thing a clout with a screwdriver handle, any fluctuation in the voltage would prove the point. if it does show any fluctuation, then by opening it nothing is lost.

Lead solder is still freely available and can be purchased and used legaly for the repair of older pre WEEE electricals.
If it is surface mount electronics then it is most likley that lead free has been used at manufacture, you should use lead free for this.
Be carfull that you do not add to much solder when re flowing any PC board the reliability can be reduced if you put blobs of lead weight on the pads of the pcb. A solder joint with a convex meniscus is a bad one that will fail thermal cycling.
If you can get hold of a rosin type flux this helps in re-working pcboards without adding to much extra solder.

I think your answer deserves a five star rating. Excellent.

I did pop the top off the old OVP and it has a one centimeter square hole in the top - not much room or access to the board inside - I'll post of pic of the access hole when my digital camera is charged up.

Anyway, the OVP does'nt work anymore so I ordered a new one and installed it this morning. It seems to work just fine but the engine light came back on again! Alas, I think I will bring my car into the dealership to get the codes read again and see if that help determine what to do next. I'll post my progress.

Thanks for all the help.

Here's an update. I took my car into the dealership and they again reported the O2 sensor as the problem. I let them know I replace the O2 sensor and the OVP and asked them to look a little harder. They then came back and said the CIS was not tuned properly. They tuned the CIS and the car is running much better.

The service rep. said that if the CIS is not properly tuned the resulting O2 content of the exaust can be way off leading incorrect diagnosis of an O2 sensor problem when the check engine light goes on (how this could happen is not clear to me. I asked for further explanation but reached the edge of the service rep's knowlege base).

Anyway, they have also reported that my ECU is also broken and that related problems will only get worse. So, I am off to search on ECU threads to get an idea of what this means!

Thanks for all the help.

Hmm, a bit expensive these ECU's. But I can get a new Bosch for 1/3 the price the dealership is quoting ($3100 CAD = 2700ish USD). Are they difficult to install?
