hi guys just a quick one im new and just bought my first merc(well last week) a 52 plate ml320. really enjoying it at the moment and plan to get it back to looking good again, as theres a couple of faults with it ie drivers side window keps dropping one side and theres a few rust spots which i plan to sort out this weekend.

Anyway just now the check engine light has popped on and now the throttle feels lumpy/slow to respond any ideas on what it could be?

Have a look on places such as amazon or eBay for an ELM327 which should cost no more than £5 which you can use with an android phone or tablet to read the ECU codes. If you use Apple devices then you’ll need a BT v4.0 which costs a little more until you can afford something else such as an icarsoft i980 or MB II which are approx. £100 and can access many more of the Mercedes ECUs.

Where are you located as there might be someone near who could help?

May have been a transitory glitch, or a sensor on the way out (watch and see if it happens again when it gets warm).

An icarsoft980 or MB11 version will pretty much pay for itself the second time you use it. Maybe there is a kind soul near you who could pop round with their one.

Try to find a respected independent Merc specialist near you, they can save you hundreds in the long run rather than a local garage with a generic code reader. Good indies will have STAR which can interrogate systems to a much finer level, and really pinpoint faults. (Generic ones may end up changing items higher up the chain which won’t fix your fault, but will cost you £...and then they’ll say you also have a further fault...and change more bits)
Hope it’s something cheap and simple - good luck

just woundering could this holding back be due to low petrol? as ive been out in the ml320 all afternoon and its been running fine but i stopped at the traffic lights and when i went to pull away(empty tank just under the petrol light) all the lights came on the dash and left me with no power. once i got it into the petrol station(100 yrds away) and filled up it run get again with no problems at all

Could well be fuel/pump/filter.

Some years ago had a car that had a build up of crud in the tank which was obstructing the pickup strainer. An air line onto the fuel line from the engine end cleared the problem.

Edited to add, it depends where the fuel pump is located on the system.

just a thought, the W163 range has a known fault with the throttle pedal , it becomes stiff and wobbles due to the plastic pin wearing out that it rotates on. Easy to replace, or as i did, remove and replace with a 10mm steel tube. I also removed the small return spring on the sensor end, made action much lighter and does not appear to have caused any issues. (mine is the ML270, 320 could be the same)

Recommend you invest in an iCarsoft MBII as soon as you can afford to, its really an essential bit of kit if you want to try and avoid lots of expensive garage bills, it can take you straight to the problem, its pointless trying to guess what might be wrong as these cars are complex.

I did it and it was a pretty noticeable benefit as it could have been years since it was last done.

Funnily enough I read something like this when I was looking at the C350. All I remember was this is more to do with the throttle fly by wire reset rather than the gearbox.
