Here's a pic after it was cleaned. Very pleased, however, it does seem a bit heavy on Diesel. After a gentle drive little town work mostly motorway at 65-70 the computer is only showing 31 mpg. It's running at halfway on the temperature gauge, about 83 degrees, it's not smoking or running badly. What could be the cause? Thanks!

Mine runs a little above half, around 90 ish. I'd be surprised if the stat is making that much difference, but mine returns 36mpg on my 14 mile commute and 42-45 on a decent run out. Maybe worth checking the tyre pressures and that you don't have a binding brake

Presume its a 320cdi? Looked back, but couldn't see a mention of engine size?

I have just checked it, the brakes weren't binding before I left, I checked after they'd been warmed up, and then went for a long drive without touching the brakes. The rear discs were cold, the fronts just slightly warm. They're pretty big so just just stored some heat I think. So I can rule that out. I took a picture of the tempreture gauge. Ten mins after stopping.

Yes, 320cdi, 3.0. I hav

Binding brake is possible, and I did notice a smell of burning rubber earlier. Yes, I'll check it out.

Ah, now then, three litre you say? Do you have a vee six? That must be a very early om642 if it is. That would explain the gearbox dipstick mystery too, as the v6 has 7G tronic.

Om642 are very common for a dead lambda sensor which does knock the economy a tad. Doesn't throw an engine light either in my experience

OK, your right (feel a vital silly now) it is a 7 speed gearbox! Is it running a bit cold do you think, how many thermostats are there? I just took it for all hard drive, the computer read 28 mpg. It does seem to run clean though, no smoke or anything. Could the computer be off?

In regards to the Lambda probe, can I just search for codes with a ODB2 reader, or does it have to go on a Star reader? It looks like I can buy a replacement Bosch Probe for £105 from carparts4less. Obviously don't want to be replacing parts needlessly. I did have it booked in for a gearbox service but worked has messed me around and I'll have to rebook it. Not sure when if that's going to be soon so sorting this MPG issue in the meantime would be great.

Mercland in Nuneaton - a well respected indie - charged me £180 inc VAT for an ATF service. So far a the service book goes it's a grey area and I was horrified when I realised it had never been done but should have. They told me it should be done about every 40K miles (and a £180 service is a lot less than a replacement auto gearbox!

I was pleasantly disappointed to find that it felt no different at all so the fluid level must have been okay!

I booked it in with the Mercedes specialist in Reading as advised earlier in this thread. Seemed like nice guys, similar price. I cancelled it, (because work messed me around with my day off) they seemed cool with that, I'll Rebook it soon. Just need to sort out the MPG issue really.

My MPG seems to be improving, there's no codes shown on my ODB2 reader, so maybe the car just needs a bit of driving. Got 37 mpg today on a 70 mile trip that Inc 20 mins in heavy traffic then a fast drive down the M3, all with the AC on. Have noticed this stain in front of the engine, (pic) on the undertray, should I be worried? And also the SBC pump is freaking me out, it seems to operate quite frequently, every two hard presses when the car is stationery, up to every five when driving, I know how expensive they are. Sorry about all this, but I still have my old car, and before I sell it I wanted to know this is worth keeping. Cheers

Thanks I will give it a go. The code from my SBC pump suggests it's not been changed I think. Could it still be on the original at 138,000? It's a 2005 car

OK, so I've done about 300 miles now, really like the car, but. I've been reading about early 7G Tronic gearbox reliability, sounds terrible. As mine has done 134,000 do you think it's likely been repaired already, I understand there's a plate that breaks inside? The change to second gear is a tiny bit lumpy when cold, but fine once warmed up. Plus it also sounds like the OM642 is an absolute sieve, oil cooler seals, main oil seals etc. I'm not being paranoid, just interested really, you guys seem to know your stuff!
