hi, I have a E220 63 plate and am having problems starting it. The car does half a turn and then stops half turn and stops half turn and stops then you have to turn key off and repeat 5 - 10 times then it bursts into life. Seems to be charge enough in the battery because when it manages to turn over properly it starts no problem. Was told to try putting car car into neutral and starting it but maybe with luck this had worked once or twice but not anymore or maybe it was just going to start anyway. it also seems worse in cold weather as most of the time it starts great.

any help would be much appreciated before I put it into a garage at £60 per hour to be told its running fine just now.

thanks

Ewen

Welcome Ewen
OK, that all sounds initially like a battery problem. Have you tested it? 5 years on roughly it may not be at it’s best especially with all that stop/start nonsense built into these.
Then starting in Neutral? Really?
I’d get the battery checked to start with

If its a manual it can work if the clutch is dragging.

As John says it does sound like a bad battery. Also check battery connections are tight and the earth is OK.

Haha- I never even considered manual Alistair ! Of course yes I know the theory of clutch drag in a manual (whatever they are)

hi thanks for the quick reply's. its an automatic and I read on a website that if you only put the park brake on without the foot handbrake and the car rollers slightly then the car may not start until you knock it into neutral but not sure if this is true. Any ideas how I test a battery as I was looking at new ones and they are about £400, want to make sure its that before I buy one

What kind of battery did you order? Is it sheathed in platinum with a T. Rex thigh bone & meteorite sculpture on top or summat? ;) I bought a new 1000Ah battery for the 215 (a rather bigger battery than required for a 220 diesel) for £160 from Halfrauds with zero discount...

Don’t start the car in neutral either. Start it in Park. That’s how it’s designed to be started, just like manuals are designed to be started in neutral.

At £60 an hour fault diagnosis is considerably cheaper than diagnosis by parts replacement too. Just a word to the wise!

It'll be an AGM 'Stop/Start' battery. AGM ones are pigging expensive.

1000Ah is a hell of a big battery!!!

That’s what the single battery 220/215/230s take. ISTR the cars with secondary consumer batteries take a 700-750Ah one?

Yeah it is especially when you can only lift it in with your fingertips!!

I think you my have added an extra '0'.... ;)
A 1000Ah battery is ten times the size of the one in the 129 :) (which cost me £55 delivered just before Xmas).

Maybe it’s 100 then! Just going from memory.

100A is damn heavy!!! ;)
