Not a fan of rigid luggage. Seriously, we have for years used 'squashy bags' when travelling extendedly, which auto-shape to fit the space available.
They go from car to car without extra expense, don't arouse unwanted attention in hotel foyers etc, and show very little signs of wear after many years brutal use.

Each to his own, if you want squashed clothing then squashy bags are the answer. If its raining, cardboard boxes definitely aren't, and no chance of an upgrade at Check In with those...
