Hello, apologies if this is in the wrong place. I am not sure if it is ok here or under the steering and brakes section.

I wanted to ask if anyone could write a quick explanation on how to undo the trim around the steering wheel, so I can get access to the steering column electronic adjuster motor? My car is a 2001 C320.
I think this part is broken. I can adjust my steering column in and out ok, but when I go to adjust it up and down the electric motor whirrs.. but there is no movement of the column. I have tried lifting up slightly when I do this but no joy.

It is set to the lowest point at the moment, and I am finding it difficult to view the dash and spedo etc so need to change asap.

I would sincerely appreciate any information about how to get into that area successfully, so I do not bust off and break clips/parts etc trying to solve this issue.

Thank you if you can spare the time to reply.
Al.

what would be up with the airbags etc taking the steering wheel off?
umm,.. perhaps I should save my pennies and take this into MB to do?

If I screw the airbags or anything else up in the process, one the car will be unuseable until I get it to a workshop, and 2 will cost me more to fix in the long run.

nightmare!

Thanks for your replies though.. great forums these.

Its easy to disconnect air bag, once unplugged lay it face down out of the sun.

There are 2 screws (torx) on the back side of the wheel.

If you don't feel confident then fair enough, as you say, hit a problem and you're off the road with a car in bits. But, don't give this job to the dealer. It's primarily a labour job (parts are minimal) so you're far better off with an MB specialist Indie who'll charge you £45 ish rather than the dealer who'll be closer to £100 per hour.. If you don't have one, post a query & where you are, and someone will recommend one to you.

Always disconnect your battery before attempting to unplug airbags, whilst in reality and with everything functioning properly the airbags cant go off. BUT it is always wise to eliminate the possibility of a bag blow out, and these things are dangerous. and same applies when fitting up again.
