How to clean your MAF

Hi
I am a new member and would be grateful for your advise please, what is the mpg of your car and is it an estate or saloon?

Just bought an estate E300TD 98R with 98000 on clock. Consumption is 27mpg on motorways less round town!

Checked it is going into fifth and the tyres and brakes are ok ( not binding)

Thanks in anticipation

Steve

The same principles apply if it will clean.

I've not tried cleaning my MAFs on my BMW but the car felt a bit sluggish. The dealer ran a diagnostic and said all was well, but on my onboard diagnostics, the car wasn't burning enough fuel at the top of third gear (according to figures from the forum). So. I ordered some new Bosch units from the U.S for a fifth of the BM price, fitted them at the weekend, and now, the TC light flashes all the way through second gear in the dry. Much more like it. The Moral - change them, they're cheap enough and make a huge difference.

The newer encapsulated types do not respond that much to cleaning, and I agree with you. The snag is that if you clean it and it is still the same, a lot of time can be wasted as you think that the thing is OK

Thanks for that 230k. I've been trying to improve fuel consumption, so after reading this post I thought I'd give my MAF a clean, looks like I'll not be needing to now. Is there a reason the C250TD doesn't have one.

Thanks and excellent work in posting these instructions and pictures.

Did exactly as you said and in addition popped a new air filter in. Car now singing along nicely, whereas it was horribly flat before.

Splendid work, Mr Parrot of Doom!

Hi All,

I have a 1999 C230K (W202). After reading this thread, I went looking for the MAF. Couldn't identify it based on Parrot's pictures. Can anyone tell me the part number or the exact location in the engine bay?
On the last service (approx 4 weeks ago - 90,000 miles), the plug leads were replaced. Since then, on a couple of occasions when I am accelerating hard, the rev limiter kicks in and I lose power. Gave me a bit of a scare while trying to overtake. I'm not sure if the issue might be related to the plug leads, but I would like to give the MAF a clean first to see if it makes a difference before I go back to my mechanic.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have noticed today that in my C180K Coupe '03 yellow engine light comes up and its ON now.

I will try cleaning MAF Sensor first, would anyone know where can I find MAF in my car? (I cannot check it now, its too dark - I will try to track it tomorow...).
Just one question - if I will disconnect MAF Sensor completely, will my engine start ?

I would apriciate any tips where can I find it...

Regards

This works wonders - I cleaned the MAF, air temp sensor and throttle body on my M104. Solved the hard cold starting, rough idle and rotten egg smell under WOT.

The only difference was i used methylated spirits to clean the MAF in a squirty bottle. Seemed to do the trick!

The earlier wire sensors clean up much better than the later types

I'm sure I have a MAF problem on my ML270CDi. Its done 90K miles and I have the following problem...

Every 1 in 30 times I start the car up it drives as if there are no revs. I can get up to speed on the flat, but trying for an overtake on even the slightest incline and ...no way...

If I stop the car and start it up again 9 times out of 10 the problem has gone.

I live in Spain so its not a cold start problem ;-)

My question is : Can somebody give me the definitive what to clean the MAF with? I am now paranoid about cleaning with the wrong thing.

thanks in advance.
This thread is incredible helpful, thanks.

Clean with Iso Propyl Alcohol in a aerosol spray can (Halfords, Maplins or Spanish equivalent), I then dried it off with a hair dryer but prob not necessary in sunny Spain.
DO NOT touch the actual sensor element with ANYTHING (cloth, paint brush or fingers)

Be liberal with the spray to wash the muck off.

If the contamination is oil and more than just a smear find out where it is coming from.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I'll see if I can find something similar over here.

I actually took the hose off and had a look through yesterday. Looked amazingly clean in there, but still got to be worth giving it a clean.

thanks.

and after all the help.....

I was at the autoparts place yesterday and had a nice bottle of cleaning product. Took it to the counter and just in passing asked the guy if this is what I should use. No, No he said this is much better. WD40.

I damn well knew I should have taken the first product, but tthere you go. Coated the thing over night, put it in the car and all is normal, but...

Im now really worried about having used WD40 as its obviously left the greasy residue.

Can someone tell me - is there anything I should do now or just leave it.

What a plonker as Del Boy would say ;-(

Clean it again with IPA.

If autoshop doesn't have IPA hunt down an electrical/electronics parts shop, they will have it for sure.
