Touch wood so far I have not had leaks in the boot of the car, but I have found the car to be a bit damp under the sparewheel, and the fuse map completely soaked, PSE pump and foam around it appear to be completely dry, but I have bought these 1kg damp eaters http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AZZB5UY and stuffed around the spare wheel to be on the safe side.

I am super worried about this, and have come across a couple videos on youtube, it maybe it will be helpful:

This needs to be dried out and fixed, the boot should be bone dry. I think it will be the seals.

The tape does not last more than a few years, plus the ends of the seal had nothing on them. The problem with filling the bottom channel is that if water does get in, it cannot get out and the metal plate will rot away.

I also see that he did not address the C pillars at all, and these can be nearly as bad as the window leaks.

I am not very sure what to look for, I think I will ask you if I see you at the next meet, hopefully will be Duxford!

One can take hours writing out these things, and no mod can be bothered to put it in the DIY.

Why should I or anyone bother any more :(
as ussual malc i have saved this to my ever thickening sl hard copy file . keep it up. thanks ajl

Hi all

I have just completed the rear screen mod and now I am waiting for it to rain !!
After removing the rear screen seal, I started to try and remove the old sealer strip and was having no luck. Anyway, I remembered I had a bodyshop tool which is known as a caramel wheel. It attaches to a drill chuck and is basically a rubber wheel (which smells of caramel ) It took ten minutes to remove every trace of the sealer so I was very pleased:D:D

This issue has been discussed and explained for so long on this forum that I must say Malcolm that what you've collated here is a really superb entry and an important one bearing in mind the amount of SL's that have suffered this along with the consequences - well done!! My service record for the 55 shows that mine were done by Mercedes and the boot is perfectly dry and seems to have been that way for years -- thus far, which after the small amounts of ingress I suffered with my 500 is a real relief. I don't know how many "fixed" cars have future problems especially those with modified seals but "if" I get an issue with mine I may well take a trip down to the West Country, find a nice local B&B and (subject to you wanting to bother at that time) let you get stuck into mine - I hope never ;) A beer would be nice though :-D

Thanks
Dale.

R230 SL500 - oh yeah!
Hi

I think my SL is missing one of the 'bungs' that fits into the drainage pipe in the boot. Any ideas what I should use to replace it with? Is it just a case of finding something to plug the hole between the seal and the drainage pipe?

Thanks
