Thanks for fixing this for useful thread Alistair ;)
No probs.
I've downloaded pretty much all Malcolm's pictures and will do others as and when i can and they become obvious to me.
I also have most of his library of documentation...I'm sorting through it all and putting into a more readily searchable form...

Your efforts are much appreciated by this leaky 350SL owner

Malc, you will be sorely missed and always in our thoughts . . .
Are there any plans to get some of the leaky SLs together again and have a mass cleansing :)
My SL55 has had new seals fitted by the previous owner and still leaks :( It would be good to do this fix as a group.

Ok, have now realised that the seals are leaking as the paper towels I had on the boot separator underneath the seals are wet on the left hand side, underneath the bolt on the seal. The bolt was a little loose so I tightened it in case that made a difference.

So I think now I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do the seals - really should have done it when the weather was nicer.

If anyone has done it and used Malcolm's guide - any tips or tricks from your own experience would be helpful.

Also, what sealant have people used?

Cheers

rexemper, I'd use the same sealer that Malcolm used in his video. I think it was Loctite sealer.
The sealer I used doesn't stick turns out is is a silicone sealer and can be lifted from the surface its supposed to be sealing
But it must be water proof as the water seems to runaway from the seals :D

Thanks. Will get some sealant ordered and then face up to it. Annoyed that I didn't do it when it wasn't so cold! Tightening the bolt seems to have done good, but now that I know its an issue I need to get it sorted.

Re-reading Malcom's instructions, there are a couple of steps where I'm not clear if the roof needs to be fully open or open so that the boot lid has swung up? Will re-read and then maybe ask a specific question on a specific step.

Have the roof half open, you may need to prop the roof up with a piece of wood between the front screen surround and the roof, this will stop the roof closing on you, then the rest will make sense, took me a few reads to suss it out too :D

Read all the instructions . Don't miss out the hosepipe used to make sure the sealant sets against the rubber properly.

I helped Malcolm do the original post and took the pictures. I may still have them somewhere if I can find them!

Thanks. Flowrider99 sent me the PDF that he made of Malcolm's original post so I will follow that carefully. I know what you mean about things making more sense when you're actually doing it and are looking at the parts in question.

Thanks all. Have found the sealer that Malcolm mentioned in his write-up - Loctite 5940. Presume a 100ml tube will do the trick?

BTW - what is the purpose of applying tape to the seals - towards the end of his tutorial? Is that to test for leaks or to help it all stick?
Thanks

EDIT - Actually, just re-reading it and its for testing if there is a leak from the rubber seal by the window, the C pillar or both. Presume that you apply the tape, flush the surface with water and then check for leaks? The tape acting as a way of sealing any gaps between the rubber and the glass/C pillar. At least, that's the way that I read it.

The worse part for me was cleaning the original double sided tape glue off the rear screen rubber, took forever....Well it sure seemed like it :(
Just ordered the proper loctite 5940 ;)

What did you use to clean that? Did you try the warm air method or good old fashioned force?

Good old fashioned thumb skin and a blunt kitchen butter knife and cleaned up with some general thinners. Careful with the rubbing with your thumb though, I was okay as my skin is like hardened leather!

Where did you order from? I've been looking on Amazon but thought I'd see if there was somewhere else to look too for this kind of stuff. Halfords don't seem to have it.

Is 100ml enough?
Thanks

As you say on Amazon Prime at £14.28 for 100ml, which should be enough with a little left...doubt you’ll find it much cheaper maybe RS
Edit: RS £10.58 but you’d need to set up an account I guess
