Hi all....again!
I think Ernest is being the devils advocate a little here.
Most of all though I think we're all missing the point
a bit. I want to improve my car (as do most of you I'm
sure)and is not difficult to improve on the OE parts and get better performance.
All car manufacturers have to design and build their vehicles to a performance/quality/price framework and
M-B are no difference (just maybe a larger frame than some others!).The parts that are used are suitable for the purpose for which they were intended. That does not mean that we can't improve on them.
The driver who likes to "press on" can fit a different compound of brake pad to reduce fade and improve even further by fitting gooved/drilled/grooved and drilled
brake discs to reduce heat build up even more.
We can fit an ignition coil with higher available voltage that will enable us to open up the plug gaps and get better throtle response, better fuel economy, smoother running and more performance into the bargain.
Plug leads are no exception. The OE leads are designed for the fitted ignition system but may only have a di-electric strength of 40-45000 volts because the igniton system is only rated at 30-35000 volts. These figures start to degrade with age until you end up with misfires, crossfires, hard leads, ends pulling off......the list
is endless.Modern materials allow us to improve on the
OE stuff that is built to the quality/price restriction and
we can now fit a coil that will give in excess of 45000
volts and put on a set of leads that will give us protection against all the bad things that happen to cheap sets (and OE over time).
Just because it doesn't have the 3 pointed star on it does not automatically mean that it's no good.
There is no end of stuff on the market that can transform our cars and give better performance in all
aspects. You do not have to pay the earth but you do have to look at exactly what it is you are getting for your money. I can ramble on for ages about this as it's something I feel very strongly about and also know a bit
about being in this business.
Anyone wanting to continue is urged to take up the cudgel..........
With the kindest of regards
