In my decades of driving as I listened to the radio traffic reports there was often issues on the "Thelwall Viaduct'. It took nearly 40 years of driving to learn where the Thelwall Viaduct was. Very few times did I actually go that far.

The most useful message that can be put on those signs in inclement weather would be 'lights to manual'. DRLs are no use to man nor beast for following traffic you with no reds on the rear
The Thelwall viaduct is indeed the shoitiest piece of road created ‘oop North’ , for no rhyme nor reason it clogs with traffic with no help, god help you if there’s an accident!

Over the years have driven in Germany often. It's fun when there is someone in the car that hasn't been before and you point out how big the town 'Ausfahrt' must be as it's signposted everywhere :cool:

:) Or those who drive up the motorway in mist (I hesitate to say fog as its really not that dense) at 85mph with fog lights blazing from front and rear when the road code says that fog lights should only be used when visibility is severely impaired.

Rule 226. You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

Rule 236
You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

(Bold emphasis is from the road code)

The UK Met Office definition of fog is visibility less than 1000m. Mist is visibility greater than 1000m but less than 3000m and humidity greater than 85%. Visibility is not affected by whether it is day or night, btw.

We use their definitions in our visibility sensors :)

Ah yes the Thelwall viaduct - spectacular view if you can see past the drivers doing 50 in the third lane...

Blackpool Council have erected numerous large electronic signs at totally random points. So far they have been unable to tell us anything other than that they are there - one actually just read "sign".

Preparing for the illuminations probably. Gives the drivers in the queues something to admire when waiting ;)

Not an electronic sign and it's been mentioned before but does make me smile. Sign on industrial premises "Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again". Wholly un - pc but funny.
