I took the key out of the ignition barrel today after parking up, and the car wouldn't lock. (1997 W210 E300TD)

It turned out that the barrel, that normally when the key is removed makes that 'schlek' sound as something or other moves around in there, had forgot to do anything.

The solution was to start the engine and kill it, then remove the key at which point normal service was resumed.

Its done this twice now. The car starts no problem, and the remote works at a good distance.

Is my ignition barrel on the way out? I'd rather know now, and get it replaced, before I can't lock my car at night, or worse still I can't start it up.

Smart + others :)
It could be many things, can lines or even the steering lock itself which is separate to the key barrel.

Its the infra red doodah, basically when you open the door and put the key in, you hear a 'shlek' sound from the barrel and then you can start the engine. When you remove the key, you hear the same 'shlek' sound.

Only twice recently, its not 'shleked' when I've removed the key.

My key felt sort of wobbly, so I ordered a new barrel. The Merc garage loaned me a service barrel and key 'cos it takes a few days to get a matched barrel.
Anyway long story short. When I got the old barrel out it fell into 3 pieces.
Change it mate while you still can. OK mine is a W124 but a barrel is a barrel, you need to be able to turn the key to position 1 to remove it. If you can't you're knacked. I wouldn't leave it much longer
Cheers
