I have made up my mind to change the coil, but I have an unusual problem - I can't find it.

Seems to be seriously tucked away somewhere - please help as I can't go anywhere at the moment.

I beleive you have an HFM type of engine management -no distributor, controlled directly from ECU. This uses 3 seperate double ended coils located under the long central (plastic) panel on top of the rocker cover.
I also beleive this type of coil can be quite costly, so it might save in the long run to take it to someone to get it checked out properly.
Good luck

Thanks - I've found them.

The coil is not that much - £37, however if one goes will that cut the others out?

Is this a serial type arrangement?

Its descrided as a wasted spark ignition. Basically each plug sparks twice each cycle, first to do the usual ignition & second (the wasted one) during the exhaust stroke. Each coil is triggered seperately by the ECU.

The problem you have is what coil to change! You could try swapping each one in turn, but there is an argument to say that if one has gone then the others may be on the way out too.

Yes £37 each is not bad, my mate has an Audi RS2, he has one for each of the 5 cylinders!

Still think you should take it to someone to check it for you with the correct test eqiupment.

Cheers for now

I changed each coil in turn - results were better but car did cut out.

I then worked it out - the ignition leads were cooler with the top cover off, I moved them so they were away form the head and hey presto - no cutting out for 2 days and a lot of driving.

Am getting a set of leads today - hopefully this will be the end of the matter.
