My Instrument backlighting not always on is this a fault? 1st time I noticed it not lit up was driving back Mercedes service after having the auxiliary (stop start) battery replaced under warranty due to a malfunction error flashing up on the dash, it was off then lit up a mile or so into the journey home. Since then it is sometimes lit, sometimes not. It's alway ok at night so maybe it's supposed to be like that and has a sensor.

Have you checked to see if the lighting switch has been turned down.It is usually a thin stalk like rheostat switch which needs to be rotated clockwise to increase the brightness.

Thanks. I'll look for that but I think that's not going to be the issue as I'v noticed the lighting just come on as I'm driving along without me changing anything.

The numbers/dials only light up when the headlights/sidelights are on.

    Thanks
It could be that's the case. Just that I've noticed them coming on during daylight. Maybe the ambient light sensor seemed it to be dark.

There should be a dipped beam logo on the left hand side of the instrument cluster that comes on at the same time. (underneath the temp gauge)
