Would have thought that a simple answer to whether or not a car must stay insured while on SORN and garaged would easily be found ... but cannot find the answer.

Has anyone here had experience and could tell me if a car has to legally remain insured when put on SORN?

I want to lay up a car to do some modifications, but not sure of the best course.

Your car does not need to be insured once you have declared a SORN. It does of course though have to be stored off public land.
You may want to reduce your insurance cover to protect only against mishap (fire, theft, damage etc.) instead of road cover, rather than cancel it.

If you don't insure it and you have an insurance gap , sometimes the bu**ers will remove your no claims bonus :p

SORNd my E Class for 3 months last year, left it on the drive, cancelled insurance, cashed in the rent, didn't lose maximum NCB.

Essentially, nothing happened apart from a flat battery.

I would still check with the insurance company , shame to loose 20 years NCB on a technicality . I only mention my concern because years ago I lost all my motorcycle NCB in a similar situation .

I think if I were to ever do anything like that then I would maintain some sort of basic Insurance cover, if only for the No Excess glass cover.

I had more important things to worry about at the time :)

If it is left on a road or layby ( Those who live in flats etc) it will have to be insured. But as said, off road it doesnt need insurance.

You have 2 years (normally) to use your NCB. I ended up close on loosing mine after car was written off and didn't replace - specialist insurer took it though

No you don't have to insure a sorned car - why would you have to...2 of mine are sorned and still insured...but if I had a banger or a scrapper/restoring car then I'd not bother

Can't be on a public road that's the whole point - a private road no (but you'd have to be really sure)

Do the sums..

Put your 20 year NCB into an insurance comparison site and get a notional quote. Go back and change the NCB to zero and check again..

If the premium difference comes out less than the cost of insuring it for the off-road period, you have your decision.
