I took my 2006 ML 320CDI in to my local dealership on the 11th August because I had a brake light warning message on. Both brake lights had ceased functioning at the same time and the back up lights were in use. The trigger for the warning had been going through a high pressure car wash, and the problem had remained for several days. The mechanics did a full diagnosis of the problem, decided that both bulbs had blown and the connections were dirty.
Since then the problem has re-occurred several times.
Sometimes the lights fail as soon as I start the car, on other occasions it can be part way through a journey. It does not appear to be triggered by driving conditions as it can happen in rain or sun and in daylight or at night. The problem continues for the rest of that journey, but on only one occasion since the original failure has it come back the next time I started the car, so whatever the problem, it appears to reset itself. It clearly is not the brake light bulbs.
Someone must have seen this problem before, and I would appreciate advice on what can be done about it, I am not comfortable with brake lights repeatedly failing, even though the car has a back up system operating.
Many thanks.
