Following on from my earlier thread, can anyone explain why going from 1st to 2nd gear in my e320 W211it seems to Jerk slightly rather than a smooth change. All gears after that are okay.
Ive tried re-educating the gearbox but, it makes no difference.
There does seem to be a slight hesitation and the engine revs increase before the changes goes through.
Thanks in advance.

Smart + others :)
What gearbox have you got? Have you checked for a software update and are you using a star to adapt gerchange?

Sounds like transmission flair to me. What you need to do is get the transmission onto STAR and see what the adaptions are doing. This will give an indication of the condition of the clutch and brake packs.

Alternatively it could be worn parts in the valve block. There are a few avenues that can create flair. Flair is the RPM 'flaring up' before gearchange.

How many miles?

I'm pretty sure it will be a 7g 722.9 . The easy way to check is if there isn't a dipstick tube for the gearbox in the engine bay then it is a 7g . The 5g 722.6 does have a dipstick tube in the engine bay .

Thanks for the info the mileage is 94000. I would take into the Mercedes garage to be put on star but, it's in the middle nowhere and they don't do courtesy cars.

If it's 7g it's an all in one unit with the transmission controller within the body of the transmission itself.
Your not going to get anywhere without STAR on this one, none of the other readers can interrogate the transmission to any depth, and there's a fair amount that can create the same problem.

It may be helpful if you could draw some of the ATF off to check it's colour and aroma. But I'm not even sure you have a drain plug on the sump. You'll have to have a look.

I vaguely remember have a chat with Alex Crow Mercedes about my 7g being jerky 1st-2nd , I think this is a feature of some of the boxes , mine included .
Having an ATF and filter change did improve it slightly . When was yours last changed . Every 40k is the ideal .

Haven't a clue Wighty when it was last done, if ever !
I bought it used with 72000 on the clock and was a chauffeur driven car before I got it, mainly London work.
I'm just wondering if my local garage can undertake this drain and refill.

If it were me I would travel to a decent Merc Indy who has done this a number of times , I believe that the gearbox needs connecting to a Merc Star computer to get a correct level at the correct temperature . If there is no evidence of the oil and filter being changed before in the cars service history you need to drop what you are doing and get it done asap . It should cost around £250 at an Indy .
Where do you live so someone can recommend an Indy ?

I would guess that is for the 5g gearbox without them draining the torque converter (contains 3.5L of oil , 50% ) ??

Wow , you are a top negotiator :) . The parts alone from Merc cost £120 for ATF and filter , without any labour .
