no its just the right way for the car to know what's going on. On a seat ateca its harder to reach the correct points than the battery...

on my S class whenever they do a software update and put it on a power supply, Xentry refuses to programme if they have gone straight to the battery. it only moves to the next step if they connect to specific connection points

As a side note after having my battery replaced I am sure the harsh ride has disappeared.
Recently in either sport or comport I have felt the ride is very harsh and could feel every lump and bump in the road.

Could be imagining it, but I always noticed it and it didn't seem right, now it just seems so much better. But the mind is a funny thing sometimes.

Ok, so I think I mucked up a jump start looking at utube videos.

Had a few instances over a period were it seemed starting the car was a bit laboured. Did some some bits and bobs with doors and tail lift opens internal lights on for a few hours.Recently only done a few short journeys.

Anyway had a complete failure to start at the worst time as I needed to get my dog to the vet, no crank whatsoever. (Still need to get there but stuffed now until I have my car)

Suspecting battery and in haste I jump started with the wife's car, but I did it with the her engine running to What I suspected was a complete dead battery.

Great stuff mine sparked into life, sadly though with an error message to drive to the workshop without changing gear for the first time ever. I couldn't drive it for 15mins as I couldn't get it out of Park. But after a decent idle and a few turns off and on managed to get it into Drive.

Anyway my local Indy let me bring it down straight away after I explained the warning. (A big thanks to them) The battery is confirmed as caput, but until replaced won't be be sure if the error message which is related to the intelligent servo module is an actual fault or related to such a low battery condition.

Searching utube I did find an video when someone jump started there ml and afterward they needed the ISM replacing.

My question is really and the bumf above is to give context;

What is the correct procedure for jump starting, should I have done it when the other car was turned off and not up but not running? Reading comments about leaving the key out, should I have left out in my car, before I tuenwd on the wife's car.

I did check manual but it wasn't specific. Normally I'd take my time in doing such things, but was rushing to try and make an appointment time.

Cheers
Hi,
Recently had to jump start the car due to duff battery.New one being fitted tomorrow. Was away from home or I would have taken battery off and charged it.Anyway, got started and made it back home.Being aware of the amount of electronics on cars nowadays I wasn't happy about having to jump start, but I had no other choice.Jumped from relatives car not one of these booster units.Followed procedure exactly as per Haynes Manual.Anyway car seems ok.Got some questions about jump starting.Grateful for any answers for future reference.
Read somewhere(after the event),that under no circumstances should a car with a Smart Charge System be jump started.
If jump starting from another car, should the engine be running?.
Also read somewhere, that the headlights, rear heated screen eg to be switched on before disconnecting the jump leads.I assume this is to minimise sparking.I would have thought that this would have caused more sparking,in particular if the alternator on the car with the dodgy battery was not charging properly,ie,the other cars battery was having to supply the extra load.
Grateful for any advice or comments on the above.
