Do you have another car to use? Mark and ben at MRK provide an excellent service. If you could package up the switch and key and send it to them on a next day they will be on the phone as soon as they get it!
If its the key they will make a new one and send it back. I'm not sure wether the eis can always be repaired but they have been able to for me in the past!
Take the blade out of the key and shake it, it might just be the chip is lose from the pcb

You will have the long key, and on this one the wire feeding the transponder coil breaks, I have repaired successfully every one. you need a very good magnifying glass to pick up the end of the wire, its varnished and this needs to be removed

The battery is only 6 months old. I cleaned both.

OK that is a short key and all intact so looking like the EIS switch, Mark needs both the EIS and the key to fix the EIS, ask him.

How is the EIS removed?

It does seem to communicate a little...there are two distinct clicks when the key is inserted.

If the steering lock does not release the key cannot be turned it could well be the steering lock, you do need to have a word with Mark on this.

I put the removal up on benzworld this afternoon for the earlier version, I can put the late one up there

It could well be the steering lock if it does not click when the key is put in.

This is the Switch

Hi!
When you say "click click" is that from the EIS or under the dash?

What year and model are we talking about?

Mark, as above, it's a 2000 W210.

I think the clicks are from the EIS...and if I try to turn the key after putting it in it will also click.

I don't know if it's relevant, but when the key is in the slot I cannot use it to operate the central locking.

Solved.

Many thanks to everyone...it was the ESL.

I was able to remove the EIS and gave this to my indie with the key. They both worked.

So, it was the ESL...I cut it off and removed the pawl. My indie then lent me an ESL Emulator and I'm back on the road again.

Of course, now I don't have a steering lock...but I'm not concerned about that.

I've ordered an emulator online...for £32.
