Well, here goes. I'm getting a very low sounding knocking on the o/s front when driving over bumps. It doesn't sound metallic so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas. It's driving me crazy at low speeds.

Probably a drop link. Not expensive or difficult to change.
If not a drop link then a balljoint or rubber bush most likely.

Drop links connect the antiroll bar to the suspension arms.

Yours may be slightly different - I think there are a few variations but the general location is the same even if the link looks different.

you have forward and rear suspension arms with rubberised joints that wear. had the same problem when going over those small speed bumps. easy enough job. even I managed to change them. don't think they're a safety issue, just annoying.

Thank you. I like to do things myself if I can so, I'll have a look. Do I need any special tools ?

The A Class had a sort of "bobling little clunk" type of noise over rough ground, on smooth tarmac it was silent.
As LK said ... That was drop links in our case, started about 40,000 miles if it helps.

If you do replace bottom arms you'll need to get the suspension alignment checked. Other than that everything is pretty standard tools. If you just replace bushes you'll probably need a press.

If it's a w204 around 08 09 plate it could well be shocks. I have the same issue. There is a tsb about it, I can post details tomorrow

Never replace drop links on 211's, more likely a caster or camber arm, at worst a shock.

Thank you. Any chance of a picture of said offender/s ?
So that I can show my indie garage.
Is the caster at the top of the suspension leg ?

the forward arms are aluminium and the rear are steel. no special tools required. I undid the anti roll bar (only the 4 bolts that hold it up) to get full access. no need for steering adjustments after either. mine were the aluminium arms by the way.

The geo will need to be checked if aftermarket arm are fitted, as the can be very slightly a different length. Also check if modified camber bolts have been fitted and that they go back in same position.
