If the government of the day get there wishes to make us all pay through the nose for large engine Vehicles/ 4x4 s obviousley there will allways be people that can and will buy them, and run them at any price.

But surely then that will be the end of there life, (car that is) who if any of us will want a 3 or 4 year old 5 litre car that you cant afford to run through taxes, green or whatever.

The victorian class system is sure going to come back, the car will be a prime example, and a lot are heading for "Shankses pony"

Oh and the smug company car driver is in for a shock too, Quote "My company will pay" How long for mate ?

The Daewoo Matiz is looking more attractive every day !

Most new rules and regs only apply to new cars, and not to our existing models

Yes rules and regs often apply only to new cars; but I think he is talking about taxes. Richmond Council is not imposing big extra taxes only on cars bought after 2006 but on all large engined cars. Absurd as it encourages early obsolescence and extra production to replace it. And the extra production will use far more resources than will be saved by the owner changing to a smaller engined car. The Richmond Tax and all those planned by George Brown should sensibly be on new cars only. That would cause many, when deciding what to buy, to choose smaller engines.

BUT heavy extra taxes on existing cars is barmy. We cannot undo the decision to buy them and the taxes can only induce harmful early obsolescence.

I have to question the legality of their scheme. The parking permit is for a space to park your car. I don't see how they can charge for that right based on the engine size of your car, when it bears no relation to the physical size of the space.

If ever the government start plonking big taxes on big motors, I'm going to buy a Chimaera/Griffith, stick an LS6 5.7 litre engine in there, remove both precats and the main cat, and run it on Tesco 99 RON fuel, with straight through pipes instead of a baffle box.

Stuff 'em.

Yes I did indeed mean all new future cars, and future proposed "Green taxes", or state theft as it should be called, we will all pay and most of the rest of the world we not abide by any rules !

Question ? is the Uk motorist the most persequted on the planet ?

And I was joking about the Daewoo Matiz, "for now anyway" !

You'll also need a C43 runabout for popping down to the supermarket.

you'll need a 500SL to nip to the shop for your newspaper as well. It would be silly to use an estate car for a little purchase like that.

My Tescos doesn't do 99 yet, but when it does, light blue touchpaper and retire.

The cost of running a bigger engine is aready prohibitive if you do any kind of mileage. Otherwise my E270 would be an E500. If you don't do any mileage, then the difference to the environment is minimal.
The policy will make little environmental difference in areas with money as they tend to be home to the new stuff. With people changing every 3 years, their 5l monsters are always in tip top condition and probably putting out less polution than your average neglected 6yr old Matiz! As 5l stuff tends to be rather expensive, the extra cost is easily soaked up by the next city bonus anyway.
It is blatant politics of envy. "I know I will never be able to afford a car like yours so I convince myself that I don't run one for environmental reasons and therefore neither should you. Then as you don't have one any more, I won't feel so much of a failure."

It's prevalent in todays nanny society. I really do feel we need another Maggie for a few years to straighten things up a bit.

On the subject of envy and self interest, it struck me last night watching the NHS staff protesting 'in our interests' that a similar thing has come to play here as well. It is now socially unnaceptable to critisise the NHS. The staff want more money to provide 'better care'. Whatever the merits of the argument, they are making out that there is no self interest here, merely concern for the patient. I've worked on welll funded and poorly funded projects over the years and I know which are more fun. Away days, training, better salaries, more staff so lower workload etc, but if I'm honest, the end product was little different. So, I think that the next time a nurse claims no self interest, I'll suggest a great way to increase NHS funding would be to have an across the board 2% pay cut!
