I usually drive with the lights in auto mode, last night turned off a lit road onto a dark country road and all lights went out including the dashboard but car still running and driving, switched to headlights and all back to normal, tried auto again and all dark so back to headlight position.
Stopped in a car park and on return after starting engine tried auto position and all as normal for the drive home, any ideas what that was?

Do you have a dashcam screen which may affect the light sensor?
Map light on?

If not, then it could be the sensor playing up. ?

Are there any codes stored?

where is the sensor in a CLK?, I have noticed in the past the headlights come on in winter sunshine and not on a dull day when it starts raining.

Lights coming on in the rain when left on auto is pretty common. It is almost a safety feature, because of reduced visibility it will make your car more visible so to speak. All of my cars that I’ve had (only of the German brew, preferred country of origin haha) have done this so that is nothing to be concerned about.
