Unfortunetely i dont get to drive the car as much as i'd like, maybe once in 2weeks, each time i start there's a rattle that fades out, and the auto gearbox lurches abit for a couple of miles then gets smooth, i was told by a gearbox wiz that this is standard for the electronic 5 speed box, it somehow assists the cat, getting it upto temperature quicker?, or... is this what you would expect from insufficient use

2 things here, yes the box will hold onto the lower gears to warm up the CAT as fast as posible.
If the oil in the box has never been changed, then do change it along with the filter
