Hi, my 2007 CLK280 has an annoying whine. It’s not spouse or child related as it happens whether they are in the car or not. And it’s definitely coming from the engine bay and it’s engine rpm not speed related.
A colleague has a 350CLS of a similar age and it doesn’t have this whine so I’m sure the sound is abnormal. None of my previous V6 engined cars had this whine either.
I bought the car in January & it now has 113k on the clock, it’s whined since I bought it. Maybe it just doesn’t like me? Anyway, a month after I bought her the water pump went. I had a new pump, serpentine belt and tensioner fitted at an Indy. I hoped when I picked the car up that the noise would have been cured but alas not.
Since then, I’ve replaced both the power steering pump and alternator. The power steering pump noticeably reduced the whine, and most people would live with the car as it is, but I tried swapping the alternator to see if I could nail the problem entirely.
Sadly there is still a faint whine. Imperceptible to the uninitiated but I know it’s there. There’s not much more I can replace, there are two guide pulleys that are original and the original a/c pump.
The a/c pump has a clutch on it so I’m thinking maybe the final problem rests with it but the units are expensive and it’s a ball-ache to fit because of legal requirements around discharge of freon. Plus I’d have to pay to get the system recharged afterwards.
My questions, therefore, are:
1. Is it worth swapping out the two guide pulleys first (low cost but imho also unlikely to be faulty)
2. Can the front clutch assembly on the a/c pump be serviced/replaced without taking the whole pump off the car?
3. Has anyone else had any experience of whining M272’s?
Please help me maintain my sanity!
TIA
