Having just spent €2500 last week replacing several parts in the front and rear suspension area - Control arm, camber strut, thrust arm, strut arms I was then told they ( MB Service Agent) could not bring wheel alignment to manufactures specification, possible problem with chasis!!!
To add further, I was then told that the main bearing in the engine will need to be replaced. And, was told that there is a know problem with this engine.
Car is 2006 model which I purchased in 2007, now has 56K miles, fully serviced with no accidents. Went to open my drivers window tonight and you guessed it, window motor won't work.
Has anyone else has engine problems and should engine give up so soon?
Happy to quote my chasis and engine number if anyone can help.
Last two cars were BMW and never had similar problems.
:(

It was a common fault with the early 642 engine, we see a load (in the dealers) when they first come out!!

Is it just one or do they all fail Cole, how about the crankshaft, what are the symptoms

Thanks for that

Should M-B take on responsibility for resolving this?

It was just a batch Malc, sounds like a heavy derv knock untill you take the fan belt off, then it has gone, its loading the front pulley with the polo v belt when you can hear it most!!

I would have a good go at them, it is not good enough and there was nothing that you could have done to have stopped it from happening

Sorry I know this is an old thread but is the main crank bearing temp related only I got the iregular tapping/ticking as in the service bulletin but it only happens between 70 and 80 degrees. The dealers are baffled

I'd remove the belt and see if the noise remains. Main bearing rumble in general is exactly that, a deep rumble or muffled knocking sound rather than ticking, but I'm not entirely sure what goes wrong with the main bearings in this case.

A noise from the main bearings will be related to engine oil temp though, and will get worse as the oil warms up and get's "thinner" along with the accompanying loss in oil pressure.

Diagnosed today by dealer being done under warrenty. Just a very light irregular ticking, no rumble and no knocking. Not there when engine is cold just between 70 and 80 degrees fades away at full temp. Stops if belt removed.
