Manual or Automatic transmission?

Auto's always have a certain amount of "slack" in the take up of drive (thru torque convertor). The latest mb auto boxes are better but are still not as direct as a manual.
Manuals are more engaging but a decent F1 box/clutch is the way to go, best of both worlds.

An auto box comes into its own in mountaneuos regions with lots of hairpins as I found out in New Zealand. A manual would have been slow and labourious.

A manual car in NZ is rare for that reason, but I'm happy to drive both in normal circumstances of level roads with just the odd hill.

I am auto all the way.

I really don't get the fuss of manuals, but maybe that's just me. I do have to drive manuals from time to time. In town and slow traffic they are a complete pain in the rear, and when you are on the open road, you are usually staying in 5th or 6th anyway. So really what is the point?!

Automatic boxes can be overidden, they can be disobedient but restricting its gear to 3 or 4 gives great back road driving.

I really like automatics, but I have to due to a back issue which would rule out a manual car for long term use.
